Athens Seibert Petition
Athens Seibert Petition
Join the fight of Athens City residents urging for immediate action to be taken to restore the faith
and safety of our beloved city and for citizens to feel they have a voice!
We are writing to express our deep concern about the corruption of city council, in particular
Chris Seibert. We have sought answers to very basic questions and those concerns have been
ignored by elected city officials. As members of this community, we feel that it is our
constitutional right to seek answers to the many questions that we have and to demand that the
current situation change.
This issue started when we noticed that there was an increase in the number of Haitian
migrants in the city and when we reached out to the city leaders with questions, the questions
were not answered. As we started looking into public records and comparing notes, we have
found more corruption, and it all comes from within city leadership and links back to the duration
of the Mayor and all the City Councilmen’s tenure.
Mr. Chris Seibert owns or is affiliated with at least seven different LLCs operating business in
the city of Athens and none of them have nor ever had a city business license registered with
the city of Athens. He has used his political position to cheat the people of Athens out of tax
revenue desperately needed for the large influx of growth in this community. He has a vested
interest in migrants that fill his and family members properties quickly, and it is unclear whether
Athens citizens have been harmed by this conflict of interest. It is also a conflict of interest for a
sitting Council Member to investigate inhumane treatment of these migrants in housing
properties that he owns.
As an elected official in the city of Athens we feel that this is directly a conflict of interest. Due to
the fact that Mr. Seibert is profiting from the migrants and other subsidized housing programs,
he is unable to uphold his oath to protect this city and the residents of this community. The
public trust has been broken by Mr. Seibert’s malfeasance.
We have started this petition to urge you to take immediate action and address this issue. We,
concerned citizens of Athens, AL, request the immediate resignation of District 1 city
councilman Mr. Chris Seibert. Not seeing this as a conflict of interest using his political position
as personal gain shows a complacency that we will not stand for. If Mr. Seibert rents properties
to the migrants, he is free to do so but as an elected official, Section 36-25-5(a) of the Alabama
Ethics Law states: “Section 36-25-5(a) states: “"No public official or public employee shall use or
cause to be used his or her official position or office to obtain personal gain for himself or
herself, or family member of the public employee or family member of the public official, or any
business with which the person is associated…”
Numerous concerned citizens have reached out to you and your staff on multiple occasions with
very basic questions and have not received answers. We the people, will not stand for it. If Mr.
Seibert will deceive the people of Athens and not follow the law and ordnances in place, what
else has he deceptively done during his twelve year tenure.
We, the undersigned, believe that this resignation would begin to address this issue and the
safety and security that the citizens of Athens once living here will be restored. We ask that you
take immediate action to make this necessary change. As an elected official, you are voted FOR
the people and BY the people and he has failed to uphold his official duties to this great town.
