English: Fiction and Non-Fiction

Date: Wednesday, 21st August 2024

1. English is divided into two main parts:

• - Fiction:
Fiction are texts or stories that are not true. They are made-up stories.
(This means that the events in the story are imagined, not real.)

• - Non-Fiction:
Non-fiction are texts or stories that are true. They are based on facts.
(These stories talk about real-life events or people.)

Genres for Fiction

A *genre* is a literary part or a piece of literature.

(Genre means the type or kind of story, like adventure or fantasy.)

Examples of stories under fiction:

1. Adventure stories: Stories about exciting and risky journeys.

2. Science fiction: Stories about the future, space, or advanced technology.
3. Mystery/detective: Stories where the characters try to solve a puzzle or crime.
4. Horror or ghost stories: Scary stories that involve ghosts or other spooky things.
5. Fantasy fiction: Stories about magical worlds with mythical creatures.
6. Historical fiction: Stories set in the past with real events but imagined characters.
7. Traditional fairy tales: Stories like 'Cinderella' or 'Jack and the Beanstalk.'
8. Fables, myths, and legends: Stories that teach a lesson or explain why things are the
way they are.
9. Real-life stories (fictionalized): Stories based on real events but with some changes to
make them more interesting.

Genres for Non-Fiction

The following are examples of texts or stories under non-fiction:

10. Autobiography: A story someone writes about their own life.

11. Biography: A story about someone’s life, written by another person.
12. Persuasive text: A text that tries to convince the reader to believe or do something.
13. Non-chronological reports: Reports that give information without following a time
order. (These types of texts don’t need to be in order by date.)

Topic 1: Non-Fiction
Autobiography:

Self life to write

Auto means "self", bio means "life", and graphy means "to write".

(This means that the person is writing about their own life.)

Autobiography
• An autobiography is a text or story that you write about yourself.
(You are telling the story of your own life.)

• - It is an account of someone's life written by the person themselves in chronological

order. (This means it tells the events in the order they happened.)

• - An autobiography is different from a biography because it is written in the first

person, explaining important events in their life. (The writer uses "I", "me", and "my"
because they are writing about themselves.)

Purpose of an Autobiography
The main purpose of an autobiography is to inform or entertain the readers.

(The writer wants to share their life story with others.)

Features of an Autobiography

1. It is written in the past tense, but it may include present and future tenses.

(Most of the story talks about what happened in the past, but it might also talk
about things that are happening now or in the future.)

2. It is written in chronological order.

(This means it follows the order of events from earliest to latest.)

3. It has facts about your life.

(It includes true details about what happened in the writer's life.)

4. It is written in the first person.

(This means it uses "I", "me", and "my" because the writer is telling their own
story.)

5. There are dates to show when important events happen.

(Dates help the reader understand when things happened in the writer's life,
like "In 2010, I started school.")

6. It uses time connectives.

(Time connectives are words like "next", "after", and "firstly" that show the
order of events.)
