WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATION COUNCIL
WASSCE 2024- HOME ECONOMICS PRACTICALS (CLOTHING AND TEXTILES)
REPORT BY THE EXAMINER INTRODUCTION All glory to God Almighty for seeing us through another year of a successful WASSCE practical. I had the opportunity to visit and mark clothing and textiles practical in five (5) schools which included: 1. Joy Standard College 2. SDA Snr. High, Kenyaasi 3. Faith Senior High School 4. Sakafia Islamic Snr. High 5. Esaase Bontefufuo SHTS Preparation of Fabric All candidates were able to grain the right edges that needed to be grained. They as well pressed their fabrics procedurally. Even though few did not do it regularly, on the average it was good. Laying Out of Pattern Pieces Quite a good number of the total candidates observed folded fabrics correctly, whiles the rest struggles out when trying to apply the concept of folding along the grain line because of how their fabrics were cut until they were prompted to fold across grain. About 80% of total candidates examined laid pattern pieces economically considering the right direction of grains and making effective use of pattern symbols such [ (place on fold). Adequate number of pins were used by a good number candidates whiles following the correct way of pinning with few of them who could not pin appropriately. Cutting Out Most candidates cut effectively exhibiting appropriate skills with cutting on long and short strokes. About 30% cut moving body around the table whiles the rest cut turning patterns to face the right direction in which they can comfortably cut. In addition, candidates supported pattern pieces with their hands while cutting. Transfer of Pattern Markings This activity was well carried out by all candidates with little or no hitches. Some candidates did not transfer the motif to be embroidered and had to re-fix pattern pieces in order to transfer it before working on. Use of Equipment An average of 75% could effectively manipulate the sewing machine effective. This proved their efficiency in using the various parts of the sewing machine correctly; for example; - Using the presser foot lifter to raise it up to place and remove the work. - Correct use of the balance wheel to lower the needle, start and stop work. - Use of hand needle - Use of scissors. However, the rest 25% managed to work but with limited experience. None of the candidates used the thimble in working. Suggestion - Clothing and textiles is practical oriented and it will be good that students by the end of their course should be well equipped with the basic skills of operating and controlling the sewing machine which is necessary to boost the interest of students in the subject. - Students must be encouraged to do attachment with seamstresses at home during holidays to increase their chances of becoming better clothing and textiles students. Conclusion Generally, candidates performance this year can be rated above average.
