1. Write your particulars and name of the CLC in the spaces provided on the cover page.
4. Answers must be rounded off to two decimal places unless otherwise stated.
● Volume refers to any three –dimensional shape (3D) occupied by a solid, liquid and gas
substance. The word capacity is the amount that a prism can hold.
● While calculating the volume, make sure that all measurement are in the same units, otherwise
first convert those specified by the question.
For this task you need to know how to read the sketches, converting all units to the same units
and substitute values into the formulae given.

CONVERSION OF UNITS:
The units of length of objects are kilometre (km), metre (m), centimetre (cm) and millimetre
(mm).
Conversion of big units to smaller units: When we convert from bigger unit to small unit we
multiply; whereas from smaller number to bigger number we divide.
Conversion table:
EXAMPLE 1
Convert 120 cm to m
120
Answer:=
100
= 1,2 m
∴ 120 cm = 1,2 km.
Rectangular prism is commonly referred to as a box. It is a 3-dimentional solid shape that has six
faces that are rectangles.
Height
Breadth
Length
To calculate the volume of a rectangular prism, we multiply it dimensions which are the length,
the width and the height. To calculate the volume the following formula is used:
Volume of a rectangular prism = length × breadth × height
EXAMPLE 2
Height = 0,04 m
B = 0,04 m
L =120 mm
Solution:
ACTIVITY 1
1.1.1 2 m to mm
(1)
1.1.2 520 cm to m

1.2 The diagram below has an area of base = 100 cm2 with a height = 15 cm. Then use the
information to:
H = 15 cm
B = 8 cm
L =12,5 cm

1.3 The fish tank has a dimension of 62 cm by 380 mm by 46 cm. Determine the volume
of the fish tank in (l). Round your answer to the nearest whole number.

A triangular prism is a prism that has a triangle as a base. If the prism has a right angled triangle
is known as a right triangular prism. You will often have to use theorem of Pythagoras when
dealing with triangular prism.
There are two different heights in a triangular prism. The first is the perpendicular height(ℎ) of
a triangular box. The area is used to calculate the area of a base. Volume of a triangular prism is
the area of the base triangle multiplied by the height the prism (𝐻) is extended.

EXAMPLE 3
Solution:
Step 3: Notice that the formula for volume Volume= 1 (𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 × ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡) × 𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
2
contain the formula for area: 1
Volume= 2 (𝑏 × ℎ) × 𝐻
1 1
Volume = 2 × 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 × ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 Volume= 2 (6𝑚 × 16𝑚) × 20𝑚
Volume= 48𝑚2 × 20𝑚e
Volume= 960 𝑚3
2.1 Use the triangular prism as shown with dimensions in a diagram below. Triangle ABC
is an equilateral triangle

2.1.1 Determine the perpendicular height of triangle ABC using the Theorem of
Pythagoras in 𝑐𝑚.

VOLUME OF A CYLINDER
Cylinder is made up of the curved part and the ends, which are two circles. The curved part
unrolls into a rectangle such that the length of the rectangle will be the same as the
circumference of the end circles.
The perimeter of the circle is called the circumference as it is the distance around the outside
edge of the circle. The diameter is a line that joins two points on opposite sides of the circle,
through the centre. As radius is half of a diameter.
EXAMPLE 4
8 cm
6 cm
Solution:
ACTIVITY 3
3.1 Calculate the volume of a cylinder with a diameter of 160𝑚𝑚 and height of 6𝑐𝑚 in
𝑐𝑚3 . Round your answer to nearest two decimal places.

3.2 The Vaseline camphor jar below has a capacity of 400ml. Determine the height of the
Vaseline camphor jar in 𝑐𝑚3 with a radius of 4𝑐𝑚 .
Hint: 1 𝑐𝑚3 = 1𝑚 𝑙
𝑣
Use formula: ℎ = 2 and 𝜋 = 3,14.
𝜋𝑟

3.3 A community centre lecturer uses the following types of pencil holders as shown on
the diagram. The lecturer wants her students to show by calculations which pencil
holder has a bigger capacity by answering the following questions:
Pencil
Pencil
Length = 10cm
Radius = 10cm Breadth = 8cm
Height = 15cm Height = 15cm
