INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

1. Write your particulars and name of the CLC in the spaces provided on the cover page.

2. Answer ALL the questions on the worksheet.

3. Calculators may be used and ALL calculations must be shown.

4. Answers must be rounded off to two decimal places unless otherwise stated.

5. All answers must be written in a simplest form.

6. Final answers must have correct units of measurement where applicable.

CALCULATING THE VOLUME OF THE 3D SHAPE.

● Volume refers to any three –dimensional shape (3D) occupied by a solid, liquid and gas
substance. The word capacity is the amount that a prism can hold.

● The units of liquid in volume include: 𝑚𝑙; 𝑙 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑘𝑙 .

● The units of solid volume includes: 𝑚𝑚3 ; 𝑐𝑚3 ; 𝑚3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑘𝑚3 .

● While calculating the volume, make sure that all measurement are in the same units, otherwise
first convert those specified by the question.

For this task you need to know how to read the sketches, converting all units to the same units
and substitute values into the formulae given.

CONVERSION OF UNITS:

The units of length of objects are kilometre (km), metre (m), centimetre (cm) and millimetre
(mm).
Conversion of big units to smaller units: When we convert from bigger unit to small unit we
multiply; whereas from smaller number to bigger number we divide.

EXAMPLE 1

Convert: 5 km to metres (m)

Answer = 5 × 1000
= 5000 m
∴ 5 km = 5000 m.

Convert 120 cm to m
120
Answer:=
100
= 1,2 m
∴ 120 cm = 1,2 km.

FINDING VOLUME OF THE RECTANGULAR PRISM

Rectangular prism is commonly referred to as a box. It is a 3-dimentional solid shape that has six
faces that are rectangles.

Height

Breadth
Length
To calculate the volume of a rectangular prism, we multiply it dimensions which are the length,
the width and the height. To calculate the volume the following formula is used:
Volume of a rectangular prism = length × breadth × height

Height = 0,04 m

B = 0,04 m
L =120 mm

MLMS 4 -4- SBA-Task: Worksheet November 2024

Solution:

Step 1: Check if all dimension have the same Length = 120 mm ÷ 10 mm = 12 cm

units. If not, convert according to the Breadth = 0,04 × 100 cm = 4 cm
provided context. Height = 0,06 × 100 cm = 6 cm

Step 2: Select the correct formula and substitute V = l × b × h

dimensions into it. V = 12 cm × 4 cm × 6 cm
V = 288 cm3
Notice that the formula for volume
contain the formula for area: Note: remember to always write units of
measurement
Volume = A𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 × ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡

Step 3: Sometimes you may be required to write Note: 1 ℓ = 1000 cm3

your volume in litres. 288
So then, V = 288 cm3 = 1000 ℓ
V = 0,288 ℓ

VOLUME OF A TRIANGULAR PRISM

A triangular prism is a prism that has a triangle as a base. If the prism has a right angled triangle
is known as a right triangular prism. You will often have to use theorem of Pythagoras when
dealing with triangular prism.

There are two different heights in a triangular prism. The first is the perpendicular height(ℎ) of
a triangular box. The area is used to calculate the area of a base. Volume of a triangular prism is
the area of the base triangle multiplied by the height the prism (𝐻) is extended.

MLMS 4 -8- SBA-Task: Worksheet November 2024

Solution:

Step 1: Use the Theorem of Pythagoras to find the ℎ2 = (10)2 − (8)2

missing side of the base. ℎ2 = 100 − 36
ℎ = √36
Calculate perpendicular height (ℎ): ℎ =6𝑚

Step 2: Determine the area of a triangle ABC 1

Area = × 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 × ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
2
1
Area = 2 × 16 × 6
Area = 48 𝑚2

Step 3: Notice that the formula for volume Volume= 1 (𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 × ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡) × 𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡
2
contain the formula for area: 1
Volume= 2 (𝑏 × ℎ) × 𝐻
1 1
Volume = 2 × 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 × ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 Volume= 2 (6𝑚 × 16𝑚) × 20𝑚
Volume= 48𝑚2 × 20𝑚e
Volume= 960 𝑚3

VOLUME OF A CYLINDER
Cylinder is made up of the curved part and the ends, which are two circles. The curved part
unrolls into a rectangle such that the length of the rectangle will be the same as the
circumference of the end circles.

The Cylinder The Net of the Cylinder

The perimeter of the circle is called the circumference as it is the distance around the outside
edge of the circle. The diameter is a line that joins two points on opposite sides of the circle,
through the centre. As radius is half of a diameter.

Volume of a cylinder = area of the base × height.

EXAMPLE 4

Calculate the volume of a cylinder as shown on the diagram below.

Note: Diagram not drawn to scale.

8 cm

6 cm

Solution:

Step 1: Make sure that the units of measurement

are the same.

Step 2: Write the formula and substitute.

Step 3: Volume of cube= 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 × 𝑣 = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ

ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑑
But 𝑟 = 2
However the base of a cube is a circle 8𝑐𝑚
∴ 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 = 𝜋𝑟 2 𝑟= = 4𝑐𝑚
2
Whereby 𝜋 is usually = 3,142 𝑣 = 3,14 × 4𝑐𝑚 × 4𝑐𝑚 × 6𝑐𝑚
𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑢𝑠 is half of a diameter 𝑣 = 304.44 𝑐𝑚3
∴ 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ Round your answer two whole number
𝑣 = 301 𝑐𝑚3

Step 4: Write the volume in 𝑙 Note:1𝑙 = 1000𝑐𝑚3

301𝑐𝑚3
