Step on Solving System of Linear Equation in Two Variables


by Elimination Method:
Step 1. Decide which Variable you want to eliminate and
Multiple one or both equation by appropriate constant so
that the variable you want to eliminate have the same
numerical coefficients.

Step 2. Add or Subtract the resulting equation and solve


the equation.

Step 3. Subtitute the value of the variable obtained in step


2 into one of the original equation and solve for the other
variable.

Step 4. Check your solution in both original equations.

Ex. 1.

Eq 1 : x + y = 8

Eq 2 : x – y = 2

to eliminate y, add eq1 and eq2

x + y=8¿ = x=5

Substitute x = 5 to Eq1

x + y=85+ y =8 y=8−5 y=3

Therefore, the solution set is (5,3).

Checking:

x + y=85+3=88=8 x− y =25−3=22=2

Since, (5,2) satisfies both equations, then it is the solution


to the system.

The system is consistent and it has one solution.

x + y=22 x− y=4

Ex. 3

x + y=62 x−3 y=2

Ex. 4

5 x+ 2 y =44 x−3 y=17
