A
Steve Fossett was a great adventurer. On
3 July 2002, he became the first person to fly
alone around the world in a balloon without
stopping. The balloon was called the Spirit
of Freedom. He was also famous for world swimmer
records in sailing and as a plane pilot.

B
He started and finished his balloon trip in
Queensland, Australia. It took him 13 days
and eight hours. He flew a total distance of
33,190 kilometres. He only slept for four hours
a day, in short 45-minute periods. 1

C
Steve’s interest in adventure started when he
was a child. He wasn’t good at team sports,
but he was a good climber. At the age of 12,
he climbed his first mountain. In his life, he
climbed many high mountains, but not Everest.
2
D
He was also a swimmer, sailor and plane
pilot. In 1985, he swam from France to
England in 22 hours. And he sailed and flew
planes around the world many times.
