Summary

Lamparilla is a Spanish term that refers to a small lamp or kerosene lamp

Such lamps were widely used from the 1860s, when kerosene first became plentiful,
until the development of electric lighting. Before the development of electricity, the
Lamparilla was used to light up the houses in barrios during the nighttime. Today,
many families who have no access to electricity and those who have lived in the
hinterlands still use the Lamparilla.

In symbolism, the burning flame of Lamparilla represents the light that can
illuminate our darkest thoughts. These thoughts might be negative or positive yet it
enlightens our life. Additionally, the people who gather in the midst of the Lamparilla,
their stories, amplify our innocent thoughts beyond our wildest imagination setting
our minds in a clear direction. The heat from the Lamparilla provides warmth that
serves as our comfort in times of trouble. The people surrounding the burning
Lamparilla, provide additional support and security in our time of fear and anxiety.
Yet, focusing our sight on the burning flame of Lamparilla while listening to the tales
and stories ignites our hopes and dreams that one day it will be alright. There are
plenty of characteristics that Lamparilla symbolizes but I think these are the only
characteristics that can justify my desires in life.

Lamparilla’s concept in educational administration signifies the role of

administrators in providing enlightenment, warmth, and hope to the educational
community. Administrators are the guiding light that helps dispel the darkness of
ignorance and fosters a nurturing and hopeful atmosphere within educational
institutions. By embodying the qualities of the Lamparilla, educational administrators
can contribute to the betterment of the education system and the future of our
students.

Although the Lamparilla is susceptible to being extinguished by the wind, it

may be kept alive by taking preventative measures. Similarly, in administration,
administrators are only human being, the possibility of encountering problems and
challenges are highly probable, however, it can fortify itself by relying on the support
and devotion of its members, whom collectively can shield and protect it from all
disturbances. Yet, a famous quote by Abraham Lincoln says, “United We Stand,
Divided We Fall”. The simplicity of Lamparilla is can embark greatest success.

The Lamparilla: Its Purpose in Bringing Enlightenment, Warmth, and Hope

Lamparilla is a Spanish term that refers to a small lamp or kerosene lamp

(https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/lamparilya). Such lamps were widely used from the

1860s, when kerosene first became plentiful, until the development of

electric lighting. The kerosene fed the wick by capillary action alone. An adjustment

knob, the only mechanism needed, controlled the lamp’s brightness by raising or

lowering the wick to vary the size of the flame

This cultural item was inherited by the Filipinos from the Spaniards which

contributed a significant impact on the lives of Filipinos. Before the development of

electricity, the Lamparilla was used to light up the houses in barrios during the

nighttime. Today, many families who have no access to electricity and those who

have lived in the hinterlands still use the Lamparilla.

If you happened to be born before Generation Z, then you probably

experienced this type of scenario. Dining in the early evening, your family would then

gather in your Sala or Balcony bringing and lighting the Lamparilla while the adults lit

their tobacco. Then, a few members of your family probably your parent or

grandparent would start sharing a story about their daily experiences, stories, and

adventures. Their tales and stories captivated your attention and stimulated your

mind which causes you to laugh, excite, and desire more until the Lamparilla fades

off or until you fall asleep.

In this simple scenario, it indicates that the Lamparilla not only lightens the

house but also brings enlightenment to everyone. The burning flame from Lamparilla

binds all the family members together. By sharing their stories and moral values,

they could poster comfort as well as ignite hope in their innocent mind.

From the perspective of a child, the stories and adventures we tell to them

mesmerize and enlightens their innocent mind and ultimately enable them to dream

big dreams. Secondly, the idea that you draw your attention in the midst of

Lamparilla is because you feel warmth and comfort being surrounded by your family.

The light that Lamparilla gave you was amplified by the bond within your family in

effect you develop love and care toward them. Lastly, looking at the burning

Lamparilla, surrounded by your family, and listening to their stories in the stillness of

the night would surely captivate and mesmerize your innocent mind to dream big as

well as hope that everything will be alright. Now, that we are adults and those

memories are gone, we cannot help ourselves but reminisce about those old times

we wish to go back again yet time is impossible.

The Concept of Lamparilla in Educational Administration

Educational administration is a discipline within the study of education that

examines the administrative theory and practice of education in general and

educational institutions and educators in particular activities

(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Educational_administration). In educational

administration, the administrators are the primary movers in achieving its mission,

vision, and goal. Meanwhile, the concept of Lamparilla embodies a powerful

metaphor that can bring enlightenment, warmth, and hope to its people.

Historically, the Lamparilla has provided illumination during the dark times. As

a symbol of guiding light, the Lamparilla represents how administrators support both

students and educators. Lamps dispel darkness and reveal the path forward, and

administrators play a crucial role in shedding light on educational issues and

opportunities. By working together, they can identify and address challenges and

develop curricula and policies that promote learning. It is through such means that

administrators illuminate the path forward, empowering teachers and students alike.

Setting clear instructions, making wise decisions, and establishing purposeful

planning can help enlighten the teacher, students, and stakeholders on delivering

quality basic education.

Furthermore, the Lamparilla adds warmth to the school administration and

school environment. Administrators, like Lamparilla’s soothing heat, may foster a

heart-warming environment in an administration. The comforting environment cannot

be created by the administrator solely but with the support, cooperation, and unity of

the people around it. This type of administration can be a source of comfort to the

teachers, learners, and stakeholders. We need to establish a warm environment so

that everyone will be productive, especially in delivering quality basic educational

services. A heart-warming environment can also draw attention from the community

which can ignite the spirit of collaboration.

On the other hand, hope is another essential aspect of the Lamparilla concept

in educational administration. In a similar way that a lamp represents hope during

dark times, administrators can instill hope by advocating for transformational

changes in education in terms of policy reforms, leadership styles, and management

organization. Nowadays, we are bombarded with various administrations that are

nothing but promises. Thus, it is necessary that we establish an administration that

can fulfill the hopes of the people, and can return their faith, trust, and smiles. With

this administration, we can help students, teachers, and stakeholders to build

dreams again in spite of all the failures and struggles they have gone through. The

concept of Lamparilla also serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience and

passion in education. Just as a lantern requires regular care and maintenance to

keep its light shining, educational administrators must be vigilant in addressing

challenges and adapting to ever-changing educational landscapes. They must be

prepared to overcome obstacles and embrace innovation, ensuring that the light of

education continues to shine brightly.

In conclusion, the Lamparilla concept in educational administration signifies

the role of administrators in providing enlightenment, warmth, and hope to the

educational community. Administrators are the guiding light that helps dispel the

darkness of ignorance and fosters a nurturing and hopeful atmosphere within

educational institutions. By embodying the qualities of the Lamparilla, educational

administrators can contribute to the betterment of the education system and the
