TrueBeam Jaw Tracking

Applicable Versions
TrueBeam 4.0 and 4.1+

Overview
As part of TrueBeam 4.0+ international safety and essential performance standard IEC 60601-2-1:2020
compliance, TrueBeam’s System Administration has a setting for the validation of jaw tracking in a plan.

Ensure the Jaw Tracking Validation setting in System Administration is correct for your clinic.

If Jaw Tracking Validation is set to Yes, plans created without jaw tracking cannot be delivered without further
action.

Enable MLC Jaw Tracking Validation

In the Plan Validation Preferences area of the Advanced subtab, MLC jaw tracking Validation is enabled by
default to ensure compliance with international safety and essential performance standard IEC 60601-2-
1:2020 for clinics with jaw tracking capability. This ensures that jaw tracking is included in all treatment plans,
except plans that do not require jaw tracking. If your facility does not have jaw tracking capability, and you
choose to disable MLC jaw tracking validation, you must confirm the setting.

Warning: Varian does not recommend disabling the jaw tracking check. By disabling jaw
tracking, the machine will NOT be in compliance with international safety and essential
performance standard IEC 60601-2-1:2020.

 Enable MLC Jaw Tracking Validation

 Yes is the default.
 If your facility treatment planning system does not have jaw tracking capability, then select No.
A WARNING message displays and must be acknowledged.

X and Y Jaw Setback

The jaw tracking margin value is the distance from the (outside or inside) edge of the jaw to the specific point
or axis in the MLC aperture in centimeters as measured by the jaw encoder inside the MLC. For information
on collimation and the MLC, see the TrueBeam Technical Reference Guide Volume 1.

Figure 7: Jaw Setback Values

 X-Jaw Setback - The X jaw tracking margin value. The default is 2.00 cm.
 Y-Jaw Setback - The Y jaw tracking margin value. The default is 2.00 cm.
For a treatment field to be valid with MLC jaw tracking when the jaws do not move during Beam On, one of
the control points must meet the following conditions:
 The X jaw shall not be further than the X-Jaw Setback distance from the MLC aperture is permitted by the
X jaw operating limit.
 The Y jaw shall not be further than the X-Jaw Setback distance from the MLC aperture is permitted by the
Y jaw operating limit.
