Learning Competencies

LO 3. Install operating system and drivers for peripherals/devices

(TLE_IACSS912ICCS-IIa-j-30)

3.1 Install Operating System (OS) in accordance with established

installation procedures and to comply with end-user requirements

• Windows Server 2008/higher version - Windows XP/7/8/10

Objectives

At the end of this activity, you are expected to:

1. understand the concept of network operating system;

2. know the different features of a network operating system;
3. value the importance of system requirements in installing Windows
Server 2008; and
4. simulate installation of Windows Server 2008 operating system.

Let’s Understand

NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM

An Operating System is a System Software that manages the hardware
resources and provides services to the Application Software. However, there is a
need to install a particular Operating System that would be capable of facilitating the
connection and communication of various autonomous computers (independent
computer that has its own local memory, hardware, and OS) over a network.

This is called the Network Operating System (NOS) which handle the
following functionalities:

• Providing access to remote printers, managing which users are using which
printers, managing how print jobs are queued, and recognizing when devices
aren't available to the network

Page 1 Install OperatIng System - WIndows Server 2008

• Enabling and managing access to files on remote systems, and determining
who can access what and who cannot
• Granting access to remote applications and resources, such as the Internet,
and making those resources seem like local resources to the
• Providing routing services, including support for major networking protocols,
so that the operating system knows what data to send and where to send it
• Monitoring the system and security, so as to provide proper security against
viruses, hackers, and data corruption
• Providing basic network administration utilities (such as SNMP, or Simple
Network Management Protocol), enabling an administrator to perform tasks
involving managing network resources and users.

TYPES OF NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEMS

There are two basic types of network operating systems, the peer-to-peer NOS and
the client/server NOS:

1. Peer-to-peer network operating systems allow users to share network

resources saved in a common, accessible network location. In this
architecture, all devices are treated equally in terms of functionality. Peer-to-
peer usually works best for small to medium LANs and is cheaper to set up.

2. Client/server network operating systems provide users with access to

resources through a server. In this architecture, all functions and applications
are unified under one file server that can be used to execute individual client
actions regardless of physical location. Client/server tends to be most
expensive to implement and requires a large amount of technical
maintenance. An advantage to the client/server model is that the network is
controlled centrally, makes changes or additions to technology easier to
incorporate.

EXAMPLES OF NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEMS

Some examples of Network Operating System are
1. Microsoft Windows Server (2008/2012/2016/2019)
2. Linux
3. macOS Server

For the purpose of illustrating the Client/Server Network setup, remember the
MS Windows 10 installation procedure previously discussed, this will serve as the
OS for the CLIENT computer; while Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, discussed
in this module, will be the OS of the SERVER computer.

Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 setup works in several

stages: First you are prompted for some basic information, including where you want
to install Windows®.

Then, the setup procedure copies files and restarts the computer. The setup
procedure concludes by presenting the Initial Configuration Tasks menu, which you
can use to adjust the server configuration for your specific needs.
