Reinforcement worksheet- Forces_ Air and water resistance
Q 1 Select the correct option:
a. The diver is streamlined and this helps her move ………… by………………. the water resistance.

• A faster, reducing
• B slower, reducing
• C slower, increasing
• D faster, increasing

b. Which shape will fall the fastest?

c. Why will it fall the fastest?

• A Because it is the most streamlined

• B Because it is the least streamlined
• C Because it is the heaviest

d. Some activities and sports need to reduce friction as much as possible if they are to be
performed correctly. Tick the activities and sports below if the reduction in friction is vital to
their performance.
Slalom canoe Speed skater Racing car Skier Sprinter.
Q2. Boats float on water.
a. A number of forces are acting on the boat. Name these TWO forces which are acting on a boat in

the direction of the arrows.

b. For the boat to float safely on the water these two forces have to be what?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………….
c. Surfers and water skiers polish the bottoms of their boards and skis in order to go faster. What
force are they trying to reduce? (Tick one box)

d. Use the list of forces below to identify the forces that are acting on the following objects.

gravity wind water resistance driving force or force by propeller

air resistance upthrust.
Q3. Give Reason
a. The earth is surrounded by a mixture of different gases. We call this mixture of gases air! Air is vital
for life and all living land animals need to breathe air in order to stay alive. Air also produces a force
call air resistance. This force can slow moving things down. Explain how the following inventions
use air resistance in order to slow them down.

c. Parachutes
Some children make four paper parachutes. Each parachute has a different sized canopy. They
drop each parachute from the same height. They measure how long it takes each parachute to
reach the ground.
Here is a table of their results.

Parachute Size (area) of canopy (cm2) Time to reach ground

(seconds)

A 100 1.0

B 400 2.0

C 625 2.5

D 900 3.0
Arrange the parachutes in order of air resistance
Largest air resistance smallest air resistance
……………………. ……………………………….. …………………………… ………………………………………

d. Explain the reason
