Career Ladder Expectations

● Ability to handle Ambiguity: Often works with product or engineering teams to define solutions in early stages of
research.
● Area of Ownership & Influence: Regularly owns and operates cross-product and cross-team features and tools. Can
work on initiatives that cross the FE and BE stack. Routinely provides feedback to other SDEs and may serve in an official
mentorship role for levels up to Senior Software Engineer.
● Communication: Regularly drives complex tech designs and post-mortem documents with cross-team and cross-service
dependencies. Able to concisely convey complex topics to a technical and nontechnical audience.
● Technical Complexity: Solves extremely difficult software problems with high visible risk, roadblocks, and occasionally
invisible risk. These problems often span multiple services and domains. Improves processes and raises standards on
teams and adjacent teams. Able to provide cost/benefit analysis and make recommendations to technical and
non-technical stakeholders on whether to adopt new technologies. An example of complexity at this level is defining and
building a set of features or entire new product area. The work likely involves multiple interacting services.
● Impact: Defines and drives large scale projects across adjacent teams.
● Process Improvement: Works with EMs and Directors to identify and drive initiatives for increasing the productivity and
effectiveness of engineering teams.
● Culture: Demonstrates and promotes the company's and engineering organization's operating principles within
engineering and adjacent organizations. Structures feedback to others around operating principles.
● Self Sufficiency: Able to operate autonomously on most projects. May require collaboration with engineering leadership
