Where,
P1 = Gas pressure before compression (inlet), barA
P2 = Gas pressure after compression (outlet), barA
Q1 = Gas volume flow rate at inlet of compressor,
m3/s
T1 = Gas temperature at inlet of compressor, K
T2 = Gas temperature at outlet of compressor
(adiabatic process), K
k= Ratio of specific heat at constant pressure to
specific heat at constant volume, Cp/Cv
P = Theoretical power requirement of compressor
e) What are guidelines to decide which fluids are to be [04] CO6 L2
kept on shell and tube sides. (Minimum 4 points for
tube and shell: 0.5 marks each)
[2]
Thermodynamic properties are summarized in Table
below and reaction properties are given below. Fogler
estimated the heat capacity for propylene glycol using
a rale-of-thumb. The rule states that the majority of low-
molecularweight, oxygen-containing organic liquids
have a heat capacity of 0.6 cal/g °F
±15%(35Btu/lbmol-°F)

4 a) As a process engineer you are required to select [05] CO6 L3
separation process for given application. What will be
various selection criteria for separation process you
will suggest? (minimum 5 criteria: 1 mark each)
b) Explain distillation column process design steps? How [08] CO3 L3
you will select light key and heavy key components
from feed mixture? (steps: 6 marks, selection of keys:
2 marks)
c) Feed mixture of distillation column contains 30% n- [12] CO3, L5
hexane, 32% n-propane, 20% n-butane and 18% n- CO5
pentane (by mole). Total fowrate of the feed is 100
kmol/hr. If butane and pentane are selected as light
key and heavy key components respectively, then fix
the operating pressure of distillation column, if the
pressure drop in column is 30 kPa; and find the
product composition. (Column pressure: 4 marks, top
temp: 2 marks, bottom temp: 2 marks, top product
composition: 2 marks, bottom product composition: 2
marks) Given data: At Pt=1500 kPa and t=60C,
Kpr=1.4, Kpe=0.21, Kbu=0.52. At Pt=1600 and 60 C,
Kpr=1.35, Kpe=0.2, Kbu=0.5. At t=150C and Pt=1630
kPa, Kbu=1.9, Kpe=0.95, Khe=0.52. at t=180C,
Kbu=2.5, Kpe=1.3, Khe=0.79. At 72C, Khe=0.11, and
at 180 C=Kpr=4.25.
