3 marks)
d) Calculate Theoretical and Actual power requirement & [06] CO3 L3
Discharge Temperature of a compressor for the below
inputs. (Equations: 3 marks, Final values: 3 marks)
Example of adiabatic Compression of air:

[1]
Where,
P1 = Gas pressure before compression (inlet), barA
P2 = Gas pressure after compression (outlet), barA
Q1 = Gas volume flow rate at inlet of compressor,
m3/s
T1 = Gas temperature at inlet of compressor, K
T2 = Gas temperature at outlet of compressor
(adiabatic process), K
k= Ratio of specific heat at constant pressure to
specific heat at constant volume, Cp/Cv
P = Theoretical power requirement of compressor
e) What are guidelines to decide which fluids are to be [04] CO6 L2
kept on shell and tube sides. (Minimum 4 points for
tube and shell: 0.5 marks each)

2 a) As a process engineer, you are suppose to do sizing of [05] CO5 L3

pump required for a given process. What pump-sizing
calculation procedure you will use for the same? Write
governing equation required for pump sizing.
(Procedure: 0.5 mark for each step, Governing
equations: 1 marks))
b) Propylene glycol is produced by hydrating propylene [20] CO3 L5
oxide using a solution of 0.1 % sulfuric acid in water as
a catalyst. An equi-volumetric solution of methanol and
propylene oxide flows into a CSTR. At the same time,
a 0.1% sulfuric acid solution also flows into the CSTR
at a rate of 2.5 times the combined flow rate of
propylene oxide and methanol. The coolant is chilled
water. Size the reactor (5 marks), determine the heat
exchanger type (8 marks) and area (2 marks), and
calculate the mixer power (5 marks). The Reaction is

[2]
Thermodynamic properties are summarized in Table
below and reaction properties are given below. Fogler
estimated the heat capacity for propylene glycol using
a rale-of-thumb. The rule states that the majority of low-
molecularweight, oxygen-containing organic liquids
have a heat capacity of 0.6 cal/g °F
±15%(35Btu/lbmol-°F)

3 a) What are various criterias for slection between [04] CO6 L3

horizontal and vertical condensors? (Each criteria: 1
