ANSYS thermal simulation

Steady state and transient heat loss simulations of the cold box
Main purpose → Compare with calculations
Future estimation method → Quickly change parameters
ANSYS Workflow
Project overview Setup and solution
About ANSYS:
Software is the global leader in
engineering simulation
Academic simulation software
→ used in research

Workflow:

Engineering data:
Conductivity, density

Geometry

Model:
Assign geometry a material
Material

Setup:
Starting temperatures, convection,
heat flow etc.

Solution
Directional heat flow (Y) on a solid
Simple calculations

Quick test on calculation versus simulation in ANSYS

Conductivity Convection

Calculations: P → 23.41 W Calculations: P → 1.6 W

ANSYS: Q = 47.813 W/m2 → P = 23.41 W ANSYS: Q = 250 W/m2 → P = 1.6 W

Gives same answer!
Conduction from chiller plates

Grey material → Insulation material

9 plates (8x8 cm)

Set the top temperature = -25°C

Set the bottom of insulation = 22°C

Calculations: Uniform -25°C

Simulation: Geometrical distribution

Results
Method (material) Heat transfer

Calculations 19.55 W
(armaflex)

Simulation 7.58 W
(armaflex)

Calculations 2W
(vacuum)

Simulation 0.73 W
(vacuum)
Convection from chiller/copper plates

Heat transfer coefficient α= 10 W/m2 (low air flow)

Temperature inside box = - 10°C

Calculate total heat loss by multiplying the average
convection with the total area

Heat transfer with plates = Heat transfer with plates =

-25°C -50°C

Simulation on side 3.07 W 8.64 W

surfaces

Simulation on top 16.93 W 43.23 W

surfaces

Total: 20.73 W 52.5 W

In equilibrium state!
→ Look at transient heat flow
Transient thermal simulation (Geometry)

Simplified geometrical setup:

9 plates with cylindrical copper tubes inside

Air (simulated as a solid-state material)
→ See how much energy it takes from the
system to cool down (Need fluid flow to make
this better)
Transient thermal simulation (setup)

Added convection on the outside surfaces
(Armaflex 0.72 W/m2, Vacuum 0.08 W/m2)

Still convection from plates (-10°C)

Temperature outside = 25 °C

Temperature outside ground = 25 °C

Added cooling power to copper tubes
= 44 W each plate (400 W / 9 plates)
(Should in reality change with temperature)
Results on floor insulation block
Armaflex Vacuum insulation

At t = 4360s → Average heat transfer = 17.2 W/m2 At t = 3660 → Average heat transfer = 2.2 W/m2
P =8.38 W P = 1.07 W
Results on air block
Armaflex Vacuum

Average temperature of the air is smaller with vacuum plates → Less heat transfer from convection → Less power loss
Results on the chiller plate
Armaflex Vacuum

Armaflex:
Vacuum:
Reaches average -25 °C at 79.6 minutes
Reaches average -25 °C at 59.9
~ 1 hour and 20 min
minutes ~ 1 hour
Conclusion

Simulation agreed with the calculations

More accurate and flexible estimations of the heat loss

Should implement vacuum plates (Reduce the heat loss → Save
time)
