Lesson Plan for 5 Macro Skills

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to do the following:
1. understand the significance of the five macro skills in academic and professional communication.
2. demonstrate the application of each macro skill through structured activities.
3. analyze how each skill is interconnected and essential for effective communication in real-world scenarios.
4. reflect on personal strengths and areas for improvement in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing.

III. Learning Experiences

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Greetings Good morning class. How are you? Are you ready for today’s lesson?
Before anything else, let’s begin our session today with a prayer.

3. Motivation The students will answer, "What are the essential skills we use daily to communicate?"

The students will share their ideas on the thought cloud.

1. Activity The class will be divided into 5 groups and will be assigned different topics to work on.
(Group Activity)
Team 1: Listening Activity
Instructions:
1. The students will listen to a short audio clip.
2. The students will answer the questions from what they heard.

Team 2: Speaking Activity

Instructions:
1. The students will discuss among the group “The role of technology in education”.
2. The students will write the highlights of their conversation in the given materials.

Team 3: Reading Activity

Instructions:
1. The students will be given an article to read.
2. And, are tasked to answer comprehension questions about what they read.

Team 4: Writing Activity

Instructions:
1. The students will write a paragraph about a place that is meaningful to them.
2. They should do it as detailed as possible, focusing on using sensory details: sight,
sound, smell, touch, and taste.

Team 5: Viewing Activity

Instructions:
1. The students will watch an inspirational video “Overcomer”
2. And, they will answer the guide questions.

2. Were there any questions raised, and how were they addressed?

Group 2:
1. How did you feel after discussing the given topic?
2. What are the pros and cons of integrating technology in education?

1. What is the main argument of the given topic?
2. What is the evidence that supports the argument?

Group 4:
1. How did using sensory details help make your paragraph more vivid?
2. What challenges did you face while writing your paragraph?

1. What was the main message of the video?
2. How does the character use imagery to communicate strength and resilience?
3. Abstraction When we learn a language, there are 5 skills that we need to complete in communication.
These skills are listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing. These 5 skills of
language (also known as the 5 skills of language learning) allow an individual to
comprehend and produce spoken language for proper and effective interpersonal
communication.

The main skills are all basic and very important. They are called the MACRO SKILLS.
Macro skills refer to the primary, key, main, and largest skill sets relative to a particular
context. It is commonly referred to in the English language.
Listening and speaking are the brain input skills but reading and writing are brain output
skills.

Listening
- Listening is the most important communication skill.
- This is a communication technique that requires the listener to understand, interpret,
and evaluate what he or she hears.
- Listening effectively improves personal relationships through the reduction of conflict
and strengthens cooperation through a collective understanding.

Speaking
- Language is a tool for communication. We communicate with others, to express our
ideas, and to know others’ ideas as well.
- The manifestations of the language in games and pair work activities are encouraging
sources to learn to speak the language.

Reading
 - It helps to develop language intuition in the corrected form. Then the brain imitates
them, producing similar sentences to express the desired meaning.
- Using skimming or scanning techniques to read quickly is highly effective. While
reading, the underlining of keywords is a must.
- Reading Skills help the students grasp the content and draw conclusions.

Writing
- Writing provides a learner with physical evidence of his achievements and he can
measure his improvement. It helps to consolidate their grasp of vocabulary and
structure and complements the other language skills. It helps to understand the text
and write compositions.
- It can foster the learner’s ability to summarize and to use the language freely. To write
flawless language one should excel in Writing Skills. Importance should be given to
composition and creative writing.

Viewing
- Viewing is a process that supports oracy and literacy. Understanding visual images and
connecting them to accompanying spoken or written words. It involves interpreting the
images for which words stand and connecting visual images in videos, computer
programs, and websites.
- Viewing enhances listening skills when students attend to nonverbal communication and
visual elements of performance, video, television, film, and multimedia presentations.

4. Application The students will be given a real-life situation and they need to reflect on how they would
apply all five macro skills in this scenario.

Working on a Team Project

How would they listen actively during meetings?
How would they speak clearly during discussions?
How would they read relevant research materials?
How would they write project reports?
How would they interpret visual aids and presentations?
