This device is intended for use under the direct supervision of a licensed
health care practitioner.
Parts and accessories used must meet the requirements of the applicable
EN 60601 series safety standards, and/or the system configuration must
meet the requirements of the EN 60601-1-1 medical electrical systems

Periodically, and whenever the integrity of the device is in doubt, test all

Service requirements
Follow the service requirements listed below.
Refer equipment servicing to GE authorized service personnel or
trained customer biomedical engineers.
Any unauthorized attempt to repair equipment under warranty voids
that warranty.
It is the user’s responsibility to report the need for service to GE or to
one of their authorized agents.
Failure on the part of the responsible individual, hospital, or
institution using this equipment to implement a satisfactory
maintenance schedule may cause undue equipment failure and
possible health hazards.
Regular maintenance, irrespective of usage, is essential to ensure
that the equipment will always be functional when required.

Every GE device has a unique serial number for identification. A sample

Description
The docking station is a quick mount and dismount base for a Dash
patient monitor. It gives the patient monitor easy connect and disconnect
access to AC power, the Unity Network™ (Ethernet), to a remote display,
and to auxiliary devices.

Remote display
When a compatible remote display is connected to the docking station,
the remote display allows you to view a docked patient monitor’s
waveform and text data at a remote location or on a larger display.
Mounting options
WARNING
For devices installed above the patient, adequate
precautions must be taken to prevent them from
dropping on the patient.
The docking station has a standard GCX mounting plate for quick mount
or dismount access. The following mounting system options support the
weight of the Dash 3000/4000/5000 patient monitor and the Dash Port 2
docking station. Verify by inspection per GCX Corporation installation
documentation.

Overview
The Dash Port 2 docking station provides an external remote (640x480 or
800x600 VGA) video capability, two additional AUX ports, Ethernet
connection (10BaseT), and AC power to a compatible Dash patient
monitor.

Sliding the lever to the full left position inserts and locks the AC power
communication connector up into the patient monitor to provide AC
power and network communication.
Sliding the lever to the right will first retract the communication
connector from the patient monitor. Then, as the lever is slid to the full
right position it will unlock the patient monitor. Releasing the lever at
this point will allow the lever to return to the midpoint position and
prevent unintentional detachment.
To remove the patient monitor you must hold the lever in the far right
position while lifting the monitor off the docking station.
AC power indicator
A green colored LED is used to indicate that the docking station is
connected to an AC power source.
Communication indicator
A green or amber colored LED is used to indicate the communication
status between the docking station and the patient monitor.
Green LED
A steady green color indicates the docking station has established
communication with the patient monitor.
Amber LED
A blinking amber color indicates that the docking station and the
Dash patient monitor are not compatible. See Chapter 5,
“Troubleshooting” .
NOTE
The Dash Port 2 communication indicator flashes amber during
normal use with Dash software version 5.3 or earlier.
Diagnostic LEDs
Diagnostic LEDs are located on the top rear surface of Dash Port 2
docking station. Refer to the Troubleshooting chapter, “Diagnostic LEDs”
on page 5-4 for details.

The docking station can be used with all Dash patient monitors.
However, some Dash patient monitors do not support the docking
station’s Ethernet network, auxiliary 1, auxiliary 2, or remote
display communication links.

When a patient monitor is connected to the docking station, there are a
total of three AUX connectors available for connecting supported devices.
The docking station provides two AUX connectors and the patient
monitor provides one AUX connector.

WARNING
PATIENT RISK — Do not connect a monochrome display
to the Dash Port 2 docking station. The visual alarm
messages may not appear properly.
Requirements
Safety information
WARNINGS
CABLES — Route all cables away from patient's throat
to avoid possible strangulation and to prevent interfering
with the monitor’s attachment to the docking station.
CAUTIONS
MPSO — Do not use a multiple portable socket outlet
(MPSO) for a system because it could result in
unacceptable enclosure leakage currents.

Docking station
Choose a location that provides an unobstructed view of the patient
monitor screen and easy access to the operating controls.
Use only the original power cable or an equivalent one.
Ensure the power outlet is wired correctly. See “Power outlet test” on
page 4-8.
Tools
No special tools are required to install this equipment.
Mounting
Spacer (optional)
A mounting spacer ships with each docking station and must be installed
for M series and locking Variable Height Mount (VHM) arm used for wall
or ceiling mounts. Instructions and hardware for installation are
included with the spacer kit.
GCX mounting
The following procedure shows how to mount the docking station to a
GCX pedestal mount. This mounting procedure is the same for the M
Series and Locking VHM arm wall mounts.
1. Slide the docking station onto the GCX mount until it bumps into the
locking pin.

docking station onto the GCX mount. Then let go of the locking pin.

When connecting a remote display, the video cable should not exceed
7.62 meters (25 feet). See “Other components” on page 6-4 for a list of
video cables and video cable extenders.

WARNINGS
PATIENT OR USER INJURY — Ensure the docking
station is positioned a safe distance away from the
patient when connecting or disconnecting the monitor.

1. Make sure the security lever starts in the unlock (far right) position.
2. Position the front of the Dash patient monitor onto the front channel
of the docking station.
3. Hold onto the monitor and allow the weight of the monitor to descend
firmly onto the docking station. The security lever should move
automatically to the central position.
4. Lock the monitor into place by sliding the security lever to the locked
(far left green zone of the label) position.

Manual adjustment
1. Power up the monitor and the remote display.
2. From the monitor, select MORE MENUS > PATIENT DATA >
VITAL SIGNS.
3. Verify the Vital Signs window displays correctly on the remote
display.

4. If the Vital Signs window does not display correctly on the remote
display, complete the following tasks:
a. Display the Vital Signs window on the monitor and on the remote
display.
b. Complete an auto-adjust (auto-tune) procedure as described in
the documentation provided with the remote display.
WARNING
Failure on the part of all responsible individuals,
hospitals or institutions, employing the use of this device,
to implement the recommended maintenance schedule
may cause equipment failure and possible health
hazards. The manufacturer does not, in any manner,
assume the responsibility for performing the
recommended maintenance schedule, unless an
Equipment Maintenance Agreement exists. The sole
responsibility rests with the individuals, hospitals, or
institutions utilizing the device.
Visual inspection
The docking station and its components should be carefully inspected
prior to installation, once every 12 months thereafter, and each time the
equipment is serviced.
Carefully inspect the equipment for physical damage. Do not use the
docking station if damage is determined. Refer damaged equipment
to qualified service personnel.
Inspect all external connections for loose connectors or frayed cables.
Have any damaged connectors or cables replaced by qualified service
personnel.
Safety labels and inscription on the device are clearly legible.
Inspect the expansion board on the patient monitor for oxidation. For
cleaning instructions, contact GE technical support.
WARNING
Disconnect AC-powered equipment from the power line
before cleaning or disinfecting its surface. Turn off the
power to battery-powered equipment before cleaning or
disinfecting its surface.
Procedure
NOTE
Clean the exterior surface on a regular basis in compliance with your
institution’s infection control and biomedical engineering
department.
6. Take care not to let fluid “pool” around connection pins. If this should
happen, blot dry with a soft lint-free cloth.

Use the following precautions to prevent damaging the equipment:

Melting, dulling, or distorting of the device case.
Brittle and breaking device case.
Blurring the lettering on label text.
Equipment malfunction or failure.

DISPOSAL — At the end of its service life, the product
described in this manual, as well as its accessories, must
be disposed of in compliance with the guidelines
regulating the disposal of such products. If you have
questions concerning disposal of the product, please
contact GE or its representatives.
Recommendations
GE recommends that all safety tests be performed
Record the date and results on the Repair Log included at the end of this
chapter.

Failure to implement a satisfactory maintenance
schedule may cause undue equipment failure and
possible health hazards. Unless you have an Equipment
Maintenance Contract, GE does not in any manner
assume the responsibility for performing the
recommended maintenance procedures. The sole
responsibility rests with the individual or institution
using the equipment. GE service personnel may, at their
discretion, follow the procedures provided in this manual
as a guide during visits to the equipment site.
Test conditions
Perform electrical safety tests under normal ambient conditions of
temperature, humidity, and pressure.
First complete all the electrical safety tests with a Dash patient monitor
connected to the docking station to verify proper operation of the
interconnected devices.
Test equipment
The recommended test equipment required to perform electrical safety
tests is listed below.

governing safety organization.
Some country agency's do require this test after field equipment repairs
(i.e. Germany's DIN VDE 0751 standards).
For equipment without a power supply cord the impedance between the
protective earth terminal and any accessible metal part which is
protectively earthed shall not exceed 0.1 ohms
For equipment with a power supply cord the impedance between the
protective earth pin in the mains plug and any accessible metal part
which is protectively earthed shall not exceed 0.2 ohms.
When taking this measurement, move the unit's power cord around.
There should be no fluctuations in resistance.
NOTE
The DMM plus leakage tester network shown is the circuitry defined by the
IEC/EN/UL 60601-1 standard for measuring leakage current.

2. Connect the power cord of the device under test to the power

3. The device under test is to be tested at its normal operating voltage.
4. Set the power switch of the device under test to ON.

1. Disconnect all test equipment from the device.

3. Disconnect the leakage tester from the wall receptacle.
Checkout procedures

Complete the checkout procedures with a Dash patient monitor
connected to the docking station.
Test equipment
The following table lists GE recommended test equipment, adaptors, and
cables you need to successfully complete the checkout procedures.
Test Equipment
1. Verify that there is at least one other bed located on the network.
2. Verify that a patient monitor is connected to the docking station.
3. Verify that the docking station’s communication indicator is
illuminated green.
4. Verify that the docking station’s security lever is in the far left
position (green area of label).
5. Verify that the docking station (not the patient monitor) is connected
to the Unity MC (Mission Critical) network by using the patient
monitor to view a remote bed as follows:
a. Press the Power key on the patient monitor to turn it on and
wait for all of the parameter boxes to display on the patient
monitor.
b. Select MORE MENUS > VIEW OTHER PATIENTS >
SELECT ANOTHER CARE UNIT.
c. Verify that you can see at least one care unit.
d. Select a care unit.
e. Select SELECT A BED TO VIEW.
f. Select a bed.
g. Verify that the patient window appears on the patient monitor’s
split-screen.
Completion
If the Dash Port 2 docking station fails any of these tests, see Chapter 5,
“Troubleshooting” .
Maintenance checklist
Use the following checklist to ensure maintenance completion.
Checkout procedures:
Repair log
patient monitor inspect the expansion board on the patient monitor for
expansion board oxidation. For cleaning instructions, contact GE
technical support.
Calibration
Remote display option
Some remote displays will automatically adjust to the docking station’s
video output signal. Other remote displays may require a manual
adjustment to display the patient monitor data correctly.
See “Adjust the remote display (option) video signal” on page 3-8 if the
remote display image shows any of the following symptoms:
The image on the remote display appears to flicker.
Part of the image on the remote display cut-off.
Troubleshooting procedures
Before troubleshooting
Before troubleshooting problems, make sure that the easiest solution is
not the cause of the problem:
Verify that all cables are securely connected to the equipment and to
the wall outlets.
Verify that the cables are inserted into the correct equipment
connectors. See “Back view” on page 2-3.
Verify that dirt or other objects are not obstructing the connector
ports.
Verify that the docking station’s security lever is in the far left
position when a patient monitor is connected to the docking station.
See “Mount the Dash patient monitor” on page 3-6.
Verify that the AC mains power and communication indicators are
normal according to the table below.

1. During the normal power up sequence, the LED illuminates amber momentarily as
connectivity between the docking station and patient monitor is established.
Diagnostic LEDs
Diagnostic LEDs are located on the top rear surface of Dash Port 2
docking station. They are intended for troubleshooting communication
problems or failures on the docking station. The diagnostic LEDs help
troubleshoot power, Unity Network, and communication between the
monitor and the Dash Port 2 docking station.
