1. Students majoring in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) at a

public secondary school in Zambales, Philippines, were interviewed about their reasons
for deciding to major in the subject and about their career goals in a qualitative
descriptive study.

2.The STEM strand is popular among students in Philippine and foreign schools for a
variety of reasons, including the effect of numerous causes.

ABSTRACT

1. Title

Pursuing STEM careers:

Perspectives of senior high school students

This qualitative descriptive study looked into senior high school STEM (science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics) students' reasons for choosing to
major in the discipline and their future career goals. The school was a public
secondary school in Zambales, the Philippines. A total of twenty students in
Grade 12 were specifically selected to partake in the research. The participant
interviews were conducted using a verified structured interview guide. To
produce an extended text, each audio interview was separately transcribed. A
close reading of the long texts was done to find key phrases and topics. The
majority of senior high school students are interested in careers in biology,
according to the report. The participants' enrollment in STEM courses is primarily
driven by their desire to take STEM-related courses in college. Nearly all of the
students planned to pursue careers in STEM after graduating from college. In
addition, the participants' main driving force for choosing STEM occupations is
personal desire. The report suggests that senior high schools host a range of
activities during career week. Such tasks include things like students' motivation
and professional aspirations, potential career paths in STEM-related courses, and
their aptitude for a certain career. Teachers can enhance STEM teaching by
implementing innovative pedagogies. To spark students' enthusiasm in science,
STEM teachers ought to complete graduate work or retrain. Senior high schools
may host workshops on career counseling to assist students in selecting their areas
of study. The Department of Education (DepEd) may provide support for the
implementation of several initiatives related to students' career preparation. This
program will help students resist peer pressure and become more self-aware of the
career path they want to take. A cooperative, real-world, goal-oriented learning
environment can be supported by schools in response to the needs of the
Industrial Revolution.

Factors Affecting Senior High School Students

to Choose STEM as Their Strand

Many factors influence students' decisions to choose the STEM strand, which explains
the large number of students who are choosing it in Philippine and international schools.
By analyzing the precise criteria that 243 STEM students in the 12th grade at Saint Louis
University Laboratory High School – Senior High (SLU LHS-SH) took into
consideration before choosing the strand, their degree of satisfaction with the strand in
light of these factors, and their career goals, this descriptive quantitative study seeks to
ascertain why. Data were collected using a four-point Likert scale and a pilot-tested
survey questionnaire with various response options. Descriptive statistics, namely the
measure of central tendency and frequency, were used to analyze the data. The results
show that students take seriously a wide range of criteria. Personal variables are topped
by Career Aims, while institutional influences are topped by School Rating and
Performance. Additionally, it appears from the results that the respondents are happy with
the STEM strand. These results are consistent with the desire of the majority of STEM
students to pursue STEM-related courses and professions like engineering and medicine.

INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT

The field of education is seeing a notable increase in the number of students choosing
to major in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), both
domestically and internationally. Numerous variables influencing students' choices
are supporting this trend, according to extensive research done in international and
Philippine schools. For example, a quantitative investigation conducted at Saint Louis
University Laboratory High School – Senior High (SLU LHS-SH) examined the
complex factors that 243 STEM students in the 12th grade took into consideration
prior to choosing the strand, assessing their degree of satisfaction, and charting their
professional paths. Meanwhile, a qualitative investigation conducted in a public
secondary school in Zambales, Philippines, illuminated the reasons behind and goals
of twenty STEM students in Grade 12, highlighting their proclivity for jobs in biology
and their unwavering commitment to STEM fields in college and beyond. All of these
research highlight how complex student decisions are, how important educational
interventions are in forming the future STEM workforce, and how important personal
goals and institutional impacts are.

PARAPHRASED FINDINGS

According to the findings of a qualitative study conducted with STEM students in

Grade 12 in Zambales, Philippines, most of the participants were driven to enroll in
STEM courses in order to pursue related disciplines in college and were interested in
job opportunities in biology. Inspired mostly by personal ambition, nearly all students
intended to pursue employment in STEM following graduation. To help students
make wise career decisions and excel in STEM professions, the report recommends
putting in place a number of interventions, such as career week events, creative
teaching pedagogies, career counseling workshops, and Department of Education
support. In line with the demands of the Industrial Revolution, these initiatives seek
to provide a cooperative learning environment (RAFANAN, R. J., et al., 2020). The
STEM strand selected by 243 Grade 12 STEM students at Saint Louis University
Laboratory High School – Senior High was found to be significantly influenced by
both institutional and personal factors, most notably career aspirations and school
rating and performance. The study was descriptive and quantitative in nature. In
keeping with their goals of pursuing jobs in STEM-related fields like engineering and
medicine, the majority of respondents also reported satisfaction with the STEM
strand. The results demonstrate how strongly STEM students are inclined to pursue
STEM-related courses and careers (MADRIAGA, A. G. et al., 2022).

EXPOUNDING STATEMENT

Two studies have shown that a variety of factors influence students' decisions to
choose the STEM strand. Students at Saint Louis University Laboratory High School
expressed satisfaction with the STEM strand and aspirations for STEM careers in a
quantitative study which focuses on the importance of institutional and personal
factors. Similar to this, a Zambales public secondary school's qualitative study shows
students passion for and interest in STEM-related courses and jobs. To better prepare
students for STEM professions and adapt to evolving industry needs, interventions
like career week activities and unique teaching techniques are recommended. These
findings show the necessity of all-encompassing strategies to help students achieve
their goals in STEM.
