Abstract
This project presents the development of an Inclusive Iris Recognition System for
Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) aimed at enhancing both security and
accessibility for users. Traditional ATM authentication methods, such as PINs and
cards, often pose challenges for individuals with disabilities, particularly those with
visual impairments. Our system leverages advanced iris recognition technology,
which offers a secure and user-friendly alternative.
Overall, this project not only addresses the security challenges faced by ATMs but
also contributes to a more inclusive banking experience, paving the way for broader
adoption of biometric technologies in everyday applications.

Project Title :Inclusive Iris Recognition System (ATM)
Rationale
The rationale behind developing an Inclusive Iris Recognition System for ATMs stems from the
growing need for secure and accessible banking solutions. Traditional methods of authentication,
such as PINs and cards, often present significant barriers for users, particularly those with
disabilities. This project seeks to address these challenges through innovative biometric
technology.

Introduction
As the world becomes increasingly digitized, the demand for secure and efficient banking solutions
has grown significantly. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) remain a vital component of
financial services, providing users with convenient access to their accounts. However, traditional
authentication methods, such as Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and physical cards, have
inherent limitations, including vulnerability to fraud and accessibility challenges for users with
disabilities.
This project aims to develop an Inclusive Iris Recognition System for ATMs that prioritizes both
security and accessibility. By leveraging advanced image processing techniques and machine
learning algorithms, we will create a system capable of accurately identifying users while
accommodating diverse needs. Key features will include audio prompts for visually impaired users
and adjustable hardware for users with mobility challenges.
Literature Survey
The literature on biometric authentication, particularly iris recognition, has evolved significantly
over the past few decades. This survey examines existing research and developments in iris
recognition technology, focusing on its application in banking, accessibility challenges, and
advancements in inclusivity.
Iris recognition leverages the unique patterns in the iris of the eye for identification. Daugman's
algorithm, introduced in the 1990s, remains a foundational method for iris recognition. It utilizes a
phase-based approach for feature extraction, achieving high accuracy and robustness (Daugman,
1993). Subsequent studies have explored enhancements to Daugman’s method, including the use of
deep learning techniques that improve recognition rates and reduce processing time (Masek &
Kittler, 2003).
2. Security Applications
Research highlights the effectiveness of iris recognition in securing financial transactions. A study
by Liu et al. (2018) demonstrated that biometric systems could significantly reduce the risk of
unauthorized access to ATMs, thus enhancing user trust in financial institutions. The integration of
iris recognition in banking is further supported by findings that show its ability to reduce fraud
compared to traditional PIN-based systems (Jain et al., 2011).
3. Accessibility Challenges
While iris recognition offers security benefits, its implementation in ATMs raises accessibility
concerns. Studies indicate that individuals with visual impairments often struggle with
conventional ATM interfaces, which rely heavily on visual cues (Hurst & Ritchie, 2002).
Additionally, the physical positioning of iris cameras can pose challenges for users with mobility
issues (West et al., 2015). Addressing these concerns is crucial for ensuring that biometric systems
are inclusive.
