B. Purpose of Manual

(1) This manual gives the maintenance instructions for the Series 8450B CDSS Hinge
Assembly manufactured by Rosemount Aerospace Inc., Burnsville, Minnesota.
The manual contains the maintenance procedures used by the shop mechanic/
technician.

Task 23-74-01-870-801-A01

1. General

Subtask 23-74-01-870-001-A01

A. Description (See Figure 1)

(1) The Rosemount Aerospace Inc. Cockpit Door Surveillance System (CDSS) Series
8450B Hinge Assembly provides a means of interfacing the LCD/Computer with the
aircraft both mechanically and electrically. The hinge assembly also provides a
means of pivoting the LCD for maintenance.

(a) Mechanically - The hinge assembly consists of a support bracket, hinge, and
lock/release mechanism. The support bracket provides a mounting flange for
attachment to the aircraft and retains the rotating portion of the hinge. The hinge
provides mounting provisions for the LCD/Computer and provides the pivot
point. A spring-loaded lock/release mechanism locks the LCD/Computer in one
of two positions: normal viewing (reading) or maintenance. A thumb-actuated
lever is provided to release the hinge from the locked positions.

(b) Electrically - The hinge assembly contains a connector on top of the support
bracket for interface with the CDSS Cable Assembly and a connector in the
hinge for interface with the LCD/Computer. A flexible cable within the hinge
assembly provides the interconnect between these two connectors.

1. Testing and Fault Isolation

NOTE: Do not repair the hinge assembly in the field. If the hinge assembly does not align with
the specifications in this manual, send the unit to an authorized Rosemount Aerospace,
Inc. repair station to test, repair, or modify. An authorized Rosemount Aerospace, Inc.
repair station can use manufacturing design data approved under the aircraft Type
Certificate or other FAA approved/technical data.

Subtask 23-74-01-810-001-A01

A. General

(1) The Series 8450B CDSS Hinge Assembly is not intended to be independently field
tested. The operator is required to have access to the Universal Video Test Fixture
(UVTF) P/N 08465-2000-0001 or BTR-41613 (see CMMs 23-70-01 and/or 23-70-03).
If unavailable, return both the hinge and LCD assemblies to the manufacturer for
testing and fault isolation.

(2) The hinge assembly only has one component that determines its electrical
functionality: Flex CCA (IPL Figure 1-55). The Testing and Fault Isolation steps are
based on determining whether the hinge assembly causes the system failure.

(3) The Testing and Fault Isolation steps are as follows:

(a) Test the LCD assembly for functionality per CMM 23-70-01 or 23-70-03.

(b) Using the UVTF and a fully functional LCD assembly, test the hinge assembly
by cycling it through (detent release motion) while performing the LCD
assembly tests per CMM 23-70-01 or 23-70-03. Any functional failure,
intermittent or otherwise, may be caused by a faulty Flex CCA.

NOTE: Series 8450B CDSS Hinge Assembly models covered in this manual
can be returned to service without testing if the Flex CCA (55) is
replaced with a new CCA prior to returning the hinge assembly to

(b) Check if the LCD assembly passes the CMM tests. If it passes, continue with
the hinge assembly testing procedure. If it fails, the LCD assembly is faulty and
should be dispositioned per LCD CMM recommendations (see Fault Isolation
section of LCD CMM). A fully functioning LCD is needed to continue with the
hinge assembly test.

(2) Test the hinge assembly for functionality (intermittent testing).

(a) Connect the hinge assembly with the test fixture and fully functioning LCD
assembly as illustrated in Figure 1001, Hinge Assembly Test Setup.

(b) Re-perform the LCD assembly test per CMM 23-70-01 or 23-70-03 with one
major difference: for every test procedure in the CMM, rotate the hinge/LCD
assembly from the open position to the closed position. This additional step
checks for intermittence that may be caused by a faulty Flex CCA.

(c) Check if the original problem persists. If the problem persists, the Flex CCA is
faulty. The customer has the option of either returning the hinge assembly to the
manufacturer for a Flex CCA replacement or attaining a new Flex CCA and
performing the replacement in the field using the Disassembly and Assembly
sections of this CMM.

(2) The procedures in this chapter are in disassembly order. Remove only those parts
necessary to accomplish the repair or replacement action.

B. Disassembly Procedure

(1) Remove hinge cover (IPL Figure 1-120, 120A) and screw (125, 125A, 125B) from
hinge bracket (50).

(2) Remove baffles (80, 85) and four cap screws (90) from flex CCA (55).

(3) Remove screw kit (95) from larger male [J1] connector (65) and remove from hinge
bracket (50).

(4) Remove two screws (75) from smaller female [J2] connector (70) and remove from
hinge (5, 5A).

(5) Remove flex CCA (55) from bracket (50) and hinge (5, 5A).

(a) Remove and replace fuses (72) from flex CCA (55) as necessary. This is in
order to ensure overcurrent protection.

(6) Remove two cap screws (45A, 45B) from hinge bracket (50).

(7) Remove bushing bracket (40, 40A, 40B) from hinge (5, 5A) and hinge bracket (50).

(8) Remove spring (35, 35A) through bushing hole of hinge (5, 5A).

(9) Slide dowel from hinge (5, 5A) out of hinge bracket (50).

(10) Lift washer (30) off of dowel on hinge (5, 5A).

(11) Remove four pins (25) from support (20, 20A) and hinge (5, 5A).

(12) Slide support (20, 20A) off of hinge (5, 5A).

A. Visual Inspection

(1) Visually examine the Series 8450B CDSS Hinge Assembly to determine the physical
condition of the unit. Replacement is recommended if any of the following problems
are observed.

(a) Connector pins are bent or broken.

(b) Flexible circuit card is cracked, split, frayed, creased, or torn.

Subtask 23-74-01-210-002-A01

B. Adjustment Verification Test

(1) With the hinge in either locked position, press the lever to unlock the mechanism.
Rotate the hinge to the other position, allowing the lever to return to the upward
position. Verify that operating the lever unlocks the mechanism from both positions.
Replace the hinge assembly if it fails to unlock in either position.

(2) Set the hinge mechanism in the closed position and the lever in the locked/upward
position.

(3) Forcefully attempt to rotate the assembly with the lever in the locked position. The
mechanism should be rigid, and prohibit all notable movement when tested in the
locked position. If the mechanism is able to rotate or has notable play, replacement is
necessary.

(4) Set the hinge mechanism in the open position and the lever in the locked/upward
position.

(5) Repeat Step (3).

(1) Apply grease (see Section 1.A. above) to both sides of lever (IPL Figure 1-10, 10A)
around the hole and surrounding area. (Apply grease to all areas that will be in
contact with hinge (5, 5A)).

(2) Put lever (10, 10A) into hinge (5, 5A), align holes and insert pin (15) through both
from side not shown (IPL Figure 1-5, 5A). Use the arbor press to press pin flush into
hinge assembly.

(a) Place cover (115) on end of lever (10, 10A), if removed.

(3) Slide support (20, 20A) over hinge (5, 5A) and align holes.

(4) Insert four pins (25) through support and hinge (5, 5A). Use the arbor press to press
pin flush into hinge assembly.

(5) Set washer (30) over dowel of hinge (5, 5A).

(6) Slide dowel from hinge (5, 5A) into hinge bracket (50). Verify that washer (30) is still
on dowel.

(7) Insert spring (35, 35A) through bushing hole of hinge (5, 5A) so that spring rests on
lever (10, 10A).

(8) Place bushing bracket (40, 40A, 40B) over hinge (5, 5A) and hinge bracket (50).

(9) Hand tighten two cap screws (45A, 45B) onto hinge bracket (50). After all screws are
in hand tight, torque cap screws (45A, 45B) to 40 in-lbs (452 N-cm).

(10) Place flex CCA (55) on bracket (50) and hinge (5, 5A), with light orange side
showing.

(a) Make sure fuse (72) is operational and properly attached to flex CCA (55). This
is in order to ensure overcurrent protection.

(11) Apply thread locking compound (see Section 1.A.) to attaching screws (75, 90, 95,
125, 125A, 125B).

(12) Screw smaller female [J2] connector (70) onto hinge (5, 5A) using two panhead
screws (75) and torque to 2 in-lbs.

(13) Screw larger male [J1] connector (65) into hinge bracket (50) using screw kit (95) and
torque to 2 in-lbs (23 N-cm).

(14) Place baffles (80, 85) over flex CCA (55). Screw them in place using four cap screws
(90) and torque to 4 in-lbs (45 N-cm).

(15) Attach hinge cover (120, 120A) and screw (125, 125A, 125B) to hinge bracket (50)
and torque screw to 4 in-lbs (45 N-cm).

NOTE: Remaining two cap screws (45) are reserved for LCD attachment to hinge
assembly. Torque to 40 in-lbs (452 N-cm).
Remaining washer (130) and cap screw (135) are reserved for hinge
assembly attachment to aircraft structure (see Specification drawing, Note
11.) Torque cap screw (135) to 20 in-lbs (226 N-cm).

(16) Verify that lever mechanism and swivel action work properly.

NOTE: The LCD, when attached, acts as a lever with which to swivel the hinge. In
the absence of the LCD (i.e., during maintenance operations) the hinge
may provide resistance to rotation. This should be interpreted as normal
operation.
