Instructions on How to Install A Single Pole Monument Sign
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Planning and Permitting

Site Assessment: Confirm the location, ensure no underground utilities are in the way (call 811 or the local “before you dig” service).
Permits: Obtain necessary permits from local authorities, ensuring compliance with zoning, building codes, and signage regulations.
Engineering Approval: Get engineering plans if needed, especially for larger signs, to ensure the structure can withstand wind loads and other environmental factors. (Fig. 1)

2. Materials and Tools Preparation

Materials: Gather sign components, pole, anchor bolts, concrete, and backfill material.
Tools: Collect tools including a post hole digger, auger, shovel, concrete mixer, level, tape measure, wrenches, and safety gear. (Fig. 2)

3. Excavation and Foundation

Mark the Spot: Use a measuring tape and markers to outline where the pole will go.
Digging the Hole: Excavate a hole for the pole’s foundation, typically below the frost line and per engineer specifications (commonly 3-6 feet deep and 1-2 feet wide depending on the
sign size). (Fig. 3 & 4)

4. Concrete Pouring
Mix Concrete: Prepare the concrete mix according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Pour Concrete: Pour the concrete into the hole around the pole, ensuring they remain level and correctly positioned. Use a level to make sure the anchor bolts are perfectly aligned.
(Fig. 5)

5. Install the Pole

Cure Time: Allow the concrete to cure (usually 24-48 hours) before proceeding to ensure it has set properly.
Pole Installation: Position the pole on the anchor bolts, using nuts and washers to secure it. Tighten bolts to secure the pole in place, ensuring it is plumb and level. (Fig. 6)

6. Mount the Sign

Attach Brackets: Secure any necessary brackets or mounting hardware to the pole
Lift the Sign: Carefully lift the sign into place, using a bucket truck or crane if necessary for larger signs.
Secure the Sign: Bolt or weld the sign to the pole brackets, making sure it is securely attached and properly aligned. (Fig. 6)

7. Electrical Work (if applicable)

Run Electrical Lines: If the sign is illuminated, run the necessary electrical lines to the sign, ensuring all wiring is safely enclosed and weatherproofed.
Connect Power: Connect the sign to the power source and test the lighting.

8. Final Checks and Cleanup

Inspect the Installation: Check all connections, ensure the sign is level, and that all bolts are tight.
Safety Check: Confirm that the installation meets all safety requirements, including proper grounding and structural integrity.
Cleanup: Remove any debris, fill in any gaps around the pole base, and restore the surrounding landscape. (Fig. 7 & 8)

9. Inspection and Final Approval

Final Inspection: Schedule a final inspection with local authorities to verify the sign installation meets all codes and regulations.
