Eighth College Peer Advisor Job
Eighth College Peer Advisor Job
DESCRIPTION
Eighth College is the newest of the undergraduate Colleges at UC San Diego and matriculated
its first cohort of students in Fall 2023. Over the next four years, the College is excited to
continue to grow its undergraduate student population, faculty/staff, and infrastructure.
Each of UC San Diego’s undergraduate colleges are centered around a unique intellectual
theme. Built on a theme of, “Community & Engagement,” Eighth College’s academic mission is
to introduce students to critical community engagement in the context of addressing structural
racism and anti-Blackness.
Eighth College's general education program prioritizes awareness of how historical factors
interplay with current conditions in order to work collectively towards community-centered
solutions to today’s most challenging problems. This includes preparation for responding to
future challenges and imagining possible futures. Students in Eighth College will be prepared to
respond to known challenges such as the following: structural racism; widening disparities in
economic wealth; compromised health and wellbeing; climate disruption; ecological
degradation; the globalization of chronic and infectious disease types and vectors; and the
declining resilience in the capacity of human settlements and working lands to adaptively
respond to increasingly frequent and devastating worldwide shocks. Featuring civically
engaged pedagogy and experiential learning, the college seeks to inspire and equip students as
collaborative future leaders and community partners.
In recruiting for this position, Eighth College looks to add to our engaged community of
students, faculty, and staff where equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice are core values.
Our faculty and staff prioritize working integratively with one another in support of our students,
in a way that models a spirit of the African concept of Ubuntu: “I am because we are.”
