KOBITON MOBILE DEVICE LAB SETUP GUIDE

1. Introduction
This document is a guide for customers who want to set up a stand-alone Kobiton Mobile Device Lab
(KMDL) at their premises. This guideline is for setting a lab with 50+ devices, hosted centrally in a rack-
based system in a data center. Smaller labs (less than 20 devices) can use the set up instructions
available on the Kobiton website’s documentation area.
The intended audience for this document is an IT staff who is familiar with network components
(firewall, switch, etc.), and is familiar with Mac OS, and Android and iOS mobile device setting.
2. Assumptions
 Network topology in this document is designed for operating as standalone lab infrastructure.
Additional discussion with Kobiton technical staff is needed to integrate KMDL into current user’s
network topology.

E.g. 50 devices requires 10Mbps, 100 devices requires 20Mbps.

Direct Connect to Amazon AWS

Kobiton Desktop requires a high-speed connection between the KMDL and Kobiton Hub
hosted at Amazon AWS US Region. To set up this connection, customer will need to
coordinate with Kobiton technical staff.

4. Implementation
4.1 Physical setup
Place and organize the 42U Cabinet with network equipment and fixed shelves as in the image
below, the space between each shelf should be 4-5 U for easier maintenance.

6.1 USB 2.0 speed limitation

In order to provide reasonable frame per second rate, on iOS devices, the captured screen is sent
in raw format which is in large size (vary 500KB - 6MB per frame) from devices. Because data will
be transferred between device and hosting machine in USB 2.0 speed, it requires one USB port on
hosting machine should handle small amount of devices.
Devices are categorized into following groups:
Group A: following iOS devices should be plugged maximum 04 devices in a USB hub (to produce
maximum 5-10 fps, 1Mb/frame)
 iPhone 4S
 iPhone 5 (model A1428, AT&T/Canada)
 iPhone 5 (model A1429, everything else)
 iPhone 5c (model A1456, A1532 | GSM)
 iPhone 5c (model A1507, A1516, A1526 (China), A1529 | Global)
 iPad 2
 iPad Mini
Group B: following iOS devices should be plugged maximum 03 devices in a USB hub (to produce
maximum 5-6 fps, 2Mb/frame)
 2nd Generation iPad Mini - Wifi
 2nd Generation iPad Mini - Cellular
 3rd Generation iPad Mini - Wifi (model A1599)
Group C: following iOS devices should be plugged maximum 01 device in a USB hub (to produce
maximum 2fps, 5-8Mb/frame)
 3rd Generation iPad
 4th Generation iPad
 5th Generation iPad (iPad Air) - Wifi
 5th Generation iPad (iPad Air) - Cellular
Group D: any devices not in A, B, C (Android and iOS of course)
6.2 Group of devices to be plugged into a Mac
