THE HISTORY OF BARANGAY

CANDABONG
Long time ago, there was a couple who lived in the coastline which is now famously named as “Bas Daku”. They had a beautiful daughter named
“Dabong”. They got her name from her fair complexion and a transparent throat whereby food that was being eaten could be visibly seen. Her beauty
was known far and wide. Many suitors came to win her heart. One day, Kang, a fisherman from Tobod, Jagna happened to be fishing along the coast of
Bas Dako saw Dabong basking in the white sand. With her long hair flowing from the waist and her innocent glare, he was instantly captivated. When he
reached the shore, he was still startled by the mesmeric beauty of Dabong. Dabong likewise felt the same as he saw the young gentleman. Kang
greeted the young lady and abruptly expressed his irrefutable feelings. That was the beginning of their love affair.

At last a date was fixed for their wedding. And during the time, it was a custom for a fiancé to do menial chores at the fiancée’s home before his
wedding. One early evening, Dabong’s father requested Kang to go with him to Camiguin Island. Not to disappointment him, he obeyed and took
Dabong to Camiguin Island too. Upon arrival, Kang saw a biyasong (orange-like fruit which was used to brawl beast) and inertly took it in his pocket.
When the father and Dabong came back a newly buried corpse was brought by him and ordered him to ride again. Not even had gone far, the curse
started to fuel up and they fainted. Kang was surprised what happened, but the father asked him if he took anything in Camiguin and he fiercely ordered
Kang to throw away what he took. With great surprise, he abruptly threw it the first Fruit at the Eastern Part of Quinale and Famously Name as
“Lamanok Island” and the Last Fruit was Throw at the Western Part now is Famously Name "Batong Galain” At last, they reached home and a
sumptuous meal was prepared. But that moment, Kang became anxious and want to unveil the mystery of his fiance’s family. Because he was
frightened that the meals were human flesh, he pretended to have stomach ache in order not to eat.

The following morning, he was about to take a bunch of huge fishes for home. When he decided to use the fishing gears of Dabong’s father, he was
outraged what he saw. He discovered organs of men, hands and limbs of a person in enclosed containers near the gears. So he decided to go back
home and became hysterical that and plan a horrifying move. “This is the kind of wife I will have”, he said to his parents. A dreadful plan was at hand to
kill the family of Dabong. During the wedding day, instead of rice, pigs, cow and wine to be brought, spears, lances, pointed bolos and shields were
packed in sacks and massacred the helpless family of Dabong. But before Dabong was killed, she cursed the place to be withered. The late generation
called the barrio Kangdabong and now refined into Candabong from the two important persons Kang and Dabong.

The Bario Candabong was once a sitio of Quinale, which was the old name of Anda and a barangay of Guindulman before it became a separate town.
On March 12, 1875, Governor General Don Jose Malcampo y Monje issued a decree creating the town of Anda and separating it from the Municipality of
Guindulman. The mother town, Guindulman, sent a person to guide the local officials on how to manage the people of the new town of Anda. This
person, Mr. Pablo Juliano Castro, was the first Justice of Peace and Anda’s first school teacher. He also served as the town’s Capitan Municipal. After
the town’s establishment, eight barangays were created by different Municipal Capitans, one of which was Barangay Candabong.

On October 23, 1916, the people of Candabong agreed to establish themselves as a barangay, creating three sitios: Sitio Lugdang, Sitio Proper, and
Sitio Virgen. In the same year, the people of Candabong built a small wooden chapel at Sitio Proper to honor Santa Cruz. On May 28, 1925, Sitio
Lugdang officially became a barangay of Anda and was renamed Barangay Lundag.

During World War II, the local government of Anda assigned nine members of the Bolo Battalion to serve as night guards at Barangay Candabong.
Japanese soldiers, guided by a Filipino spy, located where the guards slept. Armed with rifles and bayonets, the Japanese killed five guards, wounded
two, and only two escaped. The five members of the Bolo Battalion who were killed—Olimpio Tinio, Camilo Tinio, Pablo Tinio, Fructuoso Felisilda, and
Marciano Simangca—were buried without a ceremony from the parish priest, in the place where they died, known as Datag.

In 1947, through the efforts of Municipal Mayor Aquilino Deligero, Sitio Virgen separated and became a barangay of the Municipality of Anda. On May
17, 1982, Valeriano Amora I was elected Barangay Capitan of Barangay Candabong. After the election, the Barangay Council, headed by the newly
elected Barangay Capitan, identified the boundaries with neighboring barangays: Barangay Lundag to the north, Barangay Virgen to the east, and the
neighboring town of Guindulman to the west. The people of Candabong agreed to establish new sitios: Sitio San Isidro Labrador, Sitio Ipo, and Sitio
Proper, the oldest sitio.

Currently, Candabong has become a fast-growing barangay in terms of the economy. It is ranked second out of 16 barangays in Anda in terms of the
National Tax Allotment (NTA) and also boasts the second-largest population in Anda. The primary livelihoods in Candabong are farming and fishing,
which sustain the local community. Additionally, the barangay is home to several famous beach resorts and caves, attracting tourists and contributing to
the local economy. The development of infrastructure, coupled with active community involvement, has further spurred economic growth. Local
businesses have flourished, providing more job opportunities and improving the standard of living for residents. Candabong’s economic vitality plays an
important role in the overall progress of the Municipality of Anda, making it a key contributor to the region’s development.
________________________________
Furthermore, Candabong cannot be complete without the word “ANDA.” Its identity and history are deeply intertwined with its mother town, symbolized
even in its name. As Candabong continues to grow and thrive, it remains a shining example of how community, tradition, and progress can harmoniously
blend, ensuring a prosperous future for generations to come.
