Caffeine: Benefits and Risks

Caffeine is a bitter natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, and energy drinks that acts on the central
nervous system, helping to increase mental awareness and reduce tiredness. Also it is one of
the most widely consumed substance that can affect the mind and body of an individual. In the Philippines
caffeine is mostly consumed by students because the compensate for lack of sleep. Acoording to (Mahoney et
al, 2019; Zahra et al, 2021) about 92% of college or university students consume caffeine-containing drinks.
This study aims to explore that caffeine has several effects on the human body, whether positive or negative.

In the early 19th century, German poet and naturalist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe sparked interest in
coffee's chemical studies, leading to the discovery of caffeine, the principal bioactive component. The word
"caffeine" comes from the German word kaffee and French café, both meaning coffee, reflecting its early
identification in coffee beans. Goethe's fondness of the exotic drink led to health concerns, as it did for many
other Europeans.

Caffeine lowers serum levels of bilirubin, AST, and ALT due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
characteristics. As long as caffeine is taken in moderation, it is safe. Caffeine is often taken to increase alertness,
alleviate sleepiness, or simply as a drink for recreational purposes. For example, it is advised by certain
regulatory bodies that adults limit their daily caffeine intake to 450 mg. Excessive caffeine intake can possibly
be harmful to human health. Because caffeine relaxes smooth muscles, and stimulates the secretion of
hydrochloric acid, it can lead to gastrointestinal pain and inflammation.

For smaller to moderate dosages, caffeine facilitates alertness and quick reaction, though it is known to
cause anxiety, tension, and has side effects relating to sleep, particularly when taken in excess. The degree of
sensitivity to caffeine is different from person to person and can be even heightened by certain medication
combinations. Sleep patterns can be disturbed even at low dosages of caffeine. Higher dosages introduce health
issues that include blood pressure.

In conclusion, caffeine, which is the main bioactive ingredient in coffee, can be both beneficial and
harmful. While moderate amounts can increase the consumers' alertness and alleviate their sleepiness, too much
can cause health problems such as anxiety, high blood pressure, trigger stomach acid, and can highly affect
sleeping schedules. It is advised that consumers only take the safe amount of caffeine because people react

differently to different amounts of caffeine. Although there are certain benefits to caffeine, especially as a way
to compensate for the lack of sleep, it is preferable to use it in moderation to minimize health risks.
