DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS – I

Course Code: 18ME54 CIE Marks: T+P =100 + 50

Credits: 05 SEE Duration: T+P =3 + 3 Hours
Course Learning Objectives
(1) Describe the functions of various mechanical elements in a machine.
(2) Explain the relation between properties and dimensions of components
(3) Analyze and quantify the forces, stresses and related parameters which are
necessary to design shafts, couplings, keys & joints,
(4) Demonstrate ability to develop designs for various mechanical components
PART A - THEORY
Unit 1 Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering Design 08 Hrs
Mechanical engineering design, Types of design, Standards and Codes, Factor of
safety, Material selection.
Static Stresses: Static loads. Normal, Bending, Shear and Combined stresses.
Theories of failure. Stress concentration and determination of stress concentration
factor.
Unit 2 Design for Impact and Fatigue Loads 14 Hrs
Impact stress due to Axial, Bending and Torsional loads. Fatigue failure: Endurance
limit, S-N Diagram, Low cycle fatigue, High cycle fatigue, modifying factors: size
effect, surface effect. Stress concentration effects, Notch sensitivity, fluctuating
stresses, Goodman and Soderberg relationship, stresses due to combined loading,
cumulative fatigue damage.
Unit 3 Design of Shafts, Joints, and Couplings and Keys 14 Hrs
Torsion of shafts, design for strength and rigidity with steady loading, ASME codes
for power transmission shafting, shafts under combined loads. Design of Cotter and
Knuckle joints, Rigid and flexible couplings, Flange coupling, Bush and Pin type
coupling. Design of keys - rectangular/square sections
Unit 4 Riveted Joints and Welded Joints 08 Hrs
Rivet types, rivet materials, failures of riveted joints, Joint Efficiency, Boiler Joints
Types of welded joints, Strength of butt and fillet welds, welded brackets with
transverse and parallel fillet weld.
Unit 5 Threaded Fasteners and Power Screws 08 Hrs
Stresses in threaded fasteners, Effect of initial tension, Design of threaded fasteners
under static loads. Types of power screws, Torque required to raise/lower the loads,
efficiency and self-locking, Design of power screws for C-clamps, Machine vice,
sluice gates, etc.
PART B – LABORATORY – Computer Aided Machine Drawing – 24 Hrs

Assembly Drawings: Crane Hook, Radial engine, Swivel bearing, Rotary gear pump,
V-Belt drive, Feed check valve

(3) Analyze different types of forces and its influence on the component design (L4, L5)
(4) Examine and relate importance of component design to complete system.(L6)

There should be five questions from five units. Each question should be for
maximum of 16 marks

UNIT-1, UNIT-4 and UNIT- 5 should not have any choice.

UNIT -2 and UNIT -3 should have an internal choice.

Both the questions should be of the same complexity in terms of COs and Bloom’s
taxonomy level.
