2.0 DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
2
Considering the many departments at Lubao FM, ICT department is the one that contributed
most to my professional growth during the 12 weeks attachment period.

2.1 KEY FUNCTIONS AND ACTIVITIES

At Lubao Fm, the ICT department is tasked to carry out the following tasks:

• Networking. The department is tasked with installing and maintaining networking

hardware and software, assigning names and addresses to each computer or device on
the network and finally assigning names and identification numbers (IDs) to the
network users.

• Repair and maintenance of ICT related equipment as well as diagnosing faulty

ones. The ICT team is also responsible for repairing and maintaining all ICT gadgets in
the institution. They also vet and identify the machines that are in condition and those

installing new bought ICT gadgets at the institution as well as installing software in
the machines for both the institution and potential clients.

• Help in recording and editing of radio programs. Due to the Covid-19 measures, all

programs in advance after which it will be edited and aired later. The ICT team helps
in making this a success.
• Helping the Journalism and Mass Communication attaches through some ICT
related tasks. The main purpose for industrial attachment is to gain skills in your area
of study and learn how to interact with people. Since Journalism entirely depends on
ICT, the ICT team helps them whenever they are in need.

advisable to be updated always. The teams check whether there are update to the
current softwares at the institution and look for a perfect way to acquire them.

computers.

3.0 EVALUATION OF THE ATTACHMENT

5
Below is a summary of the success, challenges, some solutions initiated to solve the challenges and
recommendations from my perspective point of view.

3.1 SUCCESSES OF THE ATTACHMENT EXERCISE

i. Basic Installation, Configuration and Repair of ICT Equipment.

The institution had a well-equipped computer laboratory alongside a bulk of faulty

computers and printers that I had to work on. This greatly impacted positively to my
knowledge in ICT equipment repair and maintenance.

ii. Basic skills in Installation, Configuration and Maintenance of networks.

The institution also had a lot of networking and cabling since the entire ICT Center had

no any network cables installed.

iii. Customer ICT support. Due to availability of the Cyber Cafe at the institution of was

able to gain some news skills in Customer ICT support as well as perfecting in the

skills that I already had.

iv. Perfection of practical and theoretical skills in the use of Microsoft Office

Application Programs. Due to some assigned task that included the use of

Microsoft Office Applications from the institution and clients who visited

v. Proficiency in Computer Application Programs.

The activity greatly impacted positively to my knowledge and skills in the use,
installation and management of all Computer Application Programs. This was made
possible by the large number of computers at the institution that I had to interact with.
vi. Computer - Based Networking Skills. Under Computer – Based Networking Skills,
I gained a lot from Lubao Fm’s operations Director who is a profession in computer
science and Information Technology.

3.2 CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

• The director of operations who was the most qualified in ICT profession in the
entire Institution was sometimes too busy to interact with the attaches.
• The institution doesn’t have all networking tools that makes it difficult to gain a lot
of networking skills and getting to know how the tolls are used.

6
3.3 HOW THE CHALLENGES WERE SOLVED

• Sometimes the Director was forced to arrange a special interactive section with
attaches on weekends. During that period we (attaches) got the opportunity to ask a
lot of questions and the director himself was more than willing to answer and chip in
with assistance.
• The director also used to borrow the networking tools from a friend over the
weekends to make sure we at least get to interact with the tools and learn how to
use them practically.

3.4 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE UNIVERSITY

• The institution is highly equipped with ICT equipment and I therefore recommend
my Learning Institution to advise and encourage most of the ICT students to get
attached during their Industrial attachment.
3.5 RECCOMENDATION FOR THE
ATTACHMENT COMPANY
• The institution should at least employ an ICT attendant to help the director in carrying
out ICT related tasks as well as helping the attaches through their difficult areas.
• The Institution should also purchase their own networking tools so that the attaches
can get to learn and perfect their networking skills during their free time on their own.

3.6 SUMMARY OF THE DAILY ACTIVITIES

DURING THE ATTACHMENT PERIOD.

• Blowing dust from the machine. Blowing dust from the machine is one of the
frequently performed management practice. I used to blow dust from all the machines
at least once per week.

• Updating of the antiviruses. Frequent updating of the antiviruses was a key data
security practice that I carried out. The most common antiruses that I interacted
with included Smadav and Kaspersky.

• Installation, Repair and Upgrading and Downgrading of the Microsoft Office

application programs. Under this I used to install the Ms Office for clients and
for the institution, repair malfunctioning Ms office applications and upgrading
from either office 2007 t0 2010, or 2010t0 2013. Some others clients had office
2010 installed but preferred to use 2007 which resulted to the downgrading option.
7

• Installation of the operating systems (WINDOWS). I majorly worked

on upgrading the OS from windows 7 to windows 10. I also gained skills
in booting and changing/configuring the boot order so as to boot from your
appropriate boot media.
• Changing and replacement of the power supply. I used to remove the
faulty power supply systems and replace them with new ones or the
ones that are functioning normally.

• Audio recording and editing. Audio recording and editing using adobe
audition software was also one of my assigned tasks. This was due to the
covid – 19 protocols that made it difficult for everybody to get access to
the studio one on one.

• Utilization of Microsoft office applications. I was tasked with designing

the radio host scripts using Microsoft PowerPoint, compilation of data
using Microsoft excel, designation of wedding and success cards using
Microsoft Publisher and typing letters using mail merge feature in
Microsoft Word among other tasks.

• Printing, photocopying, scanning and lamination of documents. I

also carried out the above tasks for both the institution and all the clients
who reached out to the cyber for our help.

that the printer is in the right working condition as well as refilling the ink
whenever the ink levels go down.

the computers in the Institution.
