Arrowset I-X Mechanical

Production Packer
The Weatherford Arrowset I-X Mechanical Production Packer is a retrievable, double-
grip compression- or tension-set production packer that can be left in tension,
compression, or in a neutral position, and will hold pressure from above or below. A
large internal bypass reduces the swabbing effect during run-in and retrieval, and
closes when the packer is set. When the packer is released, the bypass opens first,
allowing the pressure to equalize before the upper slips are released. The Arrowset I-X
also features a patented upper-slip releasing system that reduces the force required to
release the packer. A non-directional slip is released first, making it easier to release
the other slips.

CAUTION: Before starting work, ensure all personal protection equipment is available and being used. Evaluate job
site to ensure work can be completed safely. All safety procedures are to be observed.

PRE-RUN INSPECTION
1. Inspect slips and packing elements for cuts, cracks and shipping damage. Replace any defective parts.
2. Ensure O.D. of packing elements are even with or below O.D of center coupling (or gauge ring) and rubber
retainer.
3. Ensure J-Body will move on J-pins to allow setting and unsetting of packer.
4. Ensure I.D. is free of debris.
5. Ensure all set screws are installed.

PRECAUTIONS AND HANDLING

1. Do not lift at slip/slip cage or packing elements areas.
2. Running speed should not exceed 90 ft/min.
3. Place a back-up on upper end of top sub when installing production tubing.
4. Place a back-up on lower end of bottom sub when installing equipment below packer.
5. DO NOT run a PFL or equivalent On-Off Tool directly above the Arrowset I-X. If a PFL or equivalent On-Off Tool
is run, a nipple with a length of 8 inches or longer is required between the On-Off Tool and Arrowset I-X.

SETTING PROCEDURE
Run the packer to setting depth. Pick up and slack off to establish true slack-off and pick-up weights. Pick up on
tubing and rotate ¼ turn to the right at the packer. Lower tubing to engage slips, release right hand torque while
moving downward. (Tubing must be able to rotate back to the left at packer to lock into set position.) Continue to set
weight on packer to pack off elements. After setting weight on packer, pick up on tubing and pull tension into packer to
engage upper slips and complete element pack off. Repeat setting weight and pulling tension 2-3 times before landing
tubing. Packer may be landed in compression, tension, or neutral position.

NOTE: Left-hand torque may be applied when pulling tension to aid in locking mandrel in set position ONLY when an
on off tool is not run in conjunction with the packer.

RELEASING PROCEDURE
The releasing procedures are the same whether the packer has been tension or compression set. Set down weight
(normally 1,000 lbs. is sufficient) on the packer and rotate the tubing ¼ turn to the right at the packer, then pick up
holding the right hand torque. The internal bypass will open, allowing pressure to equalize. Further pick up releases
the patented releasing sequential slip system, relaxing the elements, allowing the packer to be removed from the well.
The packer can be moved and reset without tripping the pipe if the elastomers have not been permanently altered
from the well environment.

In the event the packer will not release in the normal manner, there is a safety release incorporated into the J-
mechanism. Rotate the tubing hard to the right, thus breaking the tack weld on the J-pin ring. Rotate the tubing
approximately (15) additional turns to the right, releasing the J-pin ring from the tool which should aid in releasing the
packer.

PRE-RUN PRESSSURE TEST

This assembly can be plugged and tested internally prior to running. This test should not exceed 5,000 PSI.

STORAGE
Store in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight. Install thread protection in top sub and on bottom sub. Wrap slips/slip
cages and packing elements with bubble wrap or cardboard and tape in place. Wrap packer with wax coated pump
wrap to prevent corrosion for extended storage.

EXAMPLE: A 7” x 2-7/8” packer set on 2-3/8” tubing with the backside loaded and the tubing swabbed down causing
a 2,000-PSI differential from above at the packer. From the guide, pressure from above acts down on the mandrel

across 3.87 in. . Multiplying the pressure 2,000-PSI) by the area (3.87 in. ) results in 7,740 lb force down at the
packer. It will require 7,740 lb tension over the tubing weight to open the by-pass valve.

2. Slide rubber mandrel (17) in rubber retainer (16).
3. Install lower cone (18) in rubber retainer (16).
4. Place a bar through holes in rubber retainer (16) and rubber mandrel
(17) to prevent movement during assembly. 2
5. Install packing elements (14) and rubber spacer (15) on rubber
mandrel (17).
6. Install O-ring (12) in center coupling (13). 3
7. Install O-ring (10) on seal (11).
8. Install seal (11) in center coupling (13).
9. Install center coupling (13) on rubber mandrel (17). 4
10. Install upper cone (9) on center coupling (13). 5
11. Install lower slips (19) and slip springs (5) in J-body (24). 6

12. Slide J-body (24) onto rubber mandrel (17). 8

2. Remove bottom sub (25) from inner mandrel (8). Remove O-ring (23).
3. Remove torque screws (21) from J-body (24).
4. Remove lower slip body assembly (19 through 24) from rubber mandrel (17).
5. Remove lower slips (19) and slip springs (5) from J-body (24). 2
6. Remove rubber mandrel assembly (from 9 through 18) and set aside.
7. Remove inner mandrel (8) from top sub (1).
[DO NOT WRENCH OR CLAMP ON SEAL SURFACE OF MANDREL.] 3
8. Remove upper slip (6), releasing slip (7) and slip springs (5) from spring cage (2).
9. Place spring cage (2) in vise.
10. Remove upper slip assembly (4) from spring cage (2) 4
11. Remove follower spring (3) from spring cage (2). 5

13. Place set aside rubber mandrel assembly in vise with rubber retainer (16) in vise. 7

14. Remove drag spring screws (20) from J-body (24).

16. Align hole on rubber retainer (16) with hole in rubber mandrel (17).

17. Insert a bar through hole to prevent movement of rubber mandrel (17).

18. Remove upper cone (9) from center coupling (13). 12
19. Remove center coupling (13) from rubber mandrel (17). 13
20. Remove seal (11) from center coupling (13). 14

21. Remove O-ring (10) from seal (11). 14

2. Place rubber mandrel (19) into rubber retainer (18).
3. Install lower cone (20) in rubber retainer (18).

4. Place a bar through holes in rubber retainer (18) and rubber mandrel (19) to
prevent movement during assembly. 3
5. Install packing elements (15 & 17) and rubber spacers (16) on rubber
mandrel (19). 4
6. Install O-ring (14) in center coupling (11).
7. Install O-ring (12) onto seal (13).
8. Install seal (13) into center coupling (11).
9. Install center coupling (11) onto rubber mandrel (19). 5
10. Install upper cone (10) in center coupling (11). 6
11. Install lower slips (21) and slip springs (22) in control body (23). 7
12. Place control body (23) onto rubber mandrel (19). 8

13. Install rubber mandrel cap (27) onto rubber mandrel (19). 10
14. Place drag block springs (25) and drag blocks (24) in control body (23). Hold
in place with a clamp. 11
15. Compress drag blocks (24) and install J-body (29) onto control body (23). 12

2. Remove bottom sub (30) from inner mandrel (9). Remove O-ring (28).
3. Remove rubber mandrel assembly (from 10 through 29) and set aside.
4. Remove inner mandrel (9) from top sub (1). 2
[DO NOT WRENCH OR CLAMP ON SEAL SURFACE OF MANDREL.]
5. Remove upper slip (7), releasing slip (8), and slip springs (6) from spring 3
cage (3).

6. Place spring cage (3) in vise.
7. Remove spring cage cap (2) from spring cage (3).
8. Remove top sub (1) from spring cage cap (2).
9. Remove follower spring (4) from spring cage (3). 5
10. Remove spring retaining ring (5) from spring cage (3).

11. Place set aside rubber mandrel assembly in vise with rubber retainer (19) 7

12. Remove set screws (26) from J-body (29). 9
13. Compress and hold (clamp) drag blocks (24). 10

15. Align hole on rubber retainer (18) with hole in rubber mandrel (19). 12
16. Insert a bar through hole to prevent movement of rubber mandrel (19). 13

2. Remove bottom sub (33) from inner mandrel (10) and remove O-ring (31).
3. Remove rubber mandrel assembly (from 11 through 32) and set aside. 2
4. Remove inner mandrel (10) from top sub (1).
[DO NOT WRENCH OR CLAMP ON SEAL SURFACE OF MANDREL.] 3
5. Remove upper slip (8), releasing slip (9), and slip springs (7) from upper slip
body (5).

6. Place spring cage (3) in vise.
7. Remove spring cage cap (2) from spring cage (3) and remove top sub (1)
from spring cage cap (2). 5
8. Remove follower spring (4) from spring cage (3). 6

9. Remove upper slip body (5) from spring cage (3). 7

10. Remove spring retaining ring (6) from upper slip body (5). 9
11. Place set aside rubber mandrel assembly in vise with rubber retainer (21) in 10
vise.
12. Remove set screw (29) from J-body (32). 11
13. Remove J-body (32) from control body (25). [LEFT HAND THREADS.]
14. Compress drag blocks (26) and remove drag block retainer (28). 12
15. Remove drag blocks (26) and drag block springs (27) from control body (25). 13

16. Align hole on rubber retainer (21) with hole in rubber mandrel (20). Insert a 15

bar to prevent movement of rubber mandrel (20). 17
17. Remove rubber mandrel cap (30) from rubber mandrel (20). 18
18. Remove control body (25) from rubber mandrel (20). 19

19. Remove lower slips (23) and slip springs (24) from control body (25). 17
20. Remove upper cone (11) from center coupling (15). 16

2. Place rubber mandrel (20) in rubber retainer (19).
3. Install lower cone (21) in rubber retainer (19). 2
4. Place a bar through holes in rubber mandrel (20) and lower cone (21) to
prevent movement during assembly. 3
5. Install packing elements (16 & 18) and rubber spacers (17) on rubber
mandrel (20). 4

6. Install gauge ring (15) on center coupling (12).

7. Install O-rings (13) in center coupling (12).

8. Install center coupling (12) onto rubber mandrel (20). 6
9. Install seal (14) in center coupling (12). 7

10. Install upper cone (11) in center coupling (12).

11. Install lower slips (22) and lower slip springs (23) in control body (24). 10
12. Place control body (24) on rubber mandrel (20).
13. Install rubber mandrel cap (30) onto rubber mandrel (20). 11

2. Remove bottom sub (33) from inner mandrel (10). Remove O-ring (31).
3. Remove rubber mandrel assembly (from 11 through 32) and set aside. 2
4. Remove inner mandrel (10) from top sub (1).
[DO NOT WRENCH OR CLAMP ON SEAL SURFACE OF MANDREL.] 3
5. Remove upper slip (8), releasing slip (9) and slip springs (7) from slip body
(5). 4

6. Place spring cage (3) in vise.

7. Remove spring cage cap (2) from spring cage (3).

8. Remove top sub (1) from spring cage cap (2). 6
9. Remove follower spring (4) from spring cage (3). 7

10. Remove upper slip body (5) from spring cage (3).

to prevent movement of rubber mandrel. 19
