Assignment: Understanding Atomic

Models
Instructions:
Read the entire handout on the history of atomic models carefully. Answer the following
questions based on the material. You will ind a mix of example problems, short-answer, and
long-answer questions. Make sure to provide detailed responses where necessary.

Part 1: Example Problems

1. Timeline of Atomic Models
Create a timeline that lists the following key scientists and their atomic models in
chronological order. For each scientist, include the name of their model and one key feature
that distinguishes it. Use the following scientists:
- Democritus
- John Dalton
- J.J. Thomson
- Ernest Rutherford
- Niels Bohr
- Erwin Schr dinger

2. Electron Discovery
What experiment led J.J. Thomson to discover the electron? Summarize the key steps and
what he deduced from his indings.

Part 2: Short-Answer Ques ons

3. Development of the Atomic Theory
What is the origin of the word "atom," and how did early Greek philosophers like
Democritus envision atoms?

4. Dalton’s Atomic Theory

What were the two main points of Dalton’s atomic theory that are still relevant today,
despite later discoveries?

5. Gold Foil Experiment

Explain what Rutherford’s Gold Foil Experiment revealed about the structure of the atom
and how it contradicted Thomson’s model.

Part 3: Long-Answer Ques ons
6. Bohr’s Model and Quantum Theory
Niels Bohr used quantum theory to explain atomic structure, speci ically the behavior of
electrons. How did Bohr's model resolve some of the problems with Rutherford’s model, and
what limitations did it still have?

7. The Evolution of Atomic Models

Discuss how scienti ic models change over time, using the history of atomic theory as an
example. In your answer, explain how new evidence leads to changes in models and why it's
important to update models when new discoveries are made.

8. Schr dinger’s Wave Model

The current model of the atom involves electron clouds rather than ixed orbits. Using your
understanding of Schr dinger’s model, explain why this concept of electron probability is
more accurate than previous models. How does this idea challenge the simpler models of
atoms?

Submission:
Please submit your answers by October 15th. Ensure that your answers are clear, detailed,
and well-organized - please answer in full, complete sentences and communicate all your
ideas. Don’t be boring! This will be marked and you’ll be tested on all this stuff so get to it!
