Extract 1
“ Is there anybody there?’ said the Traveller,
Knocking on the moonlit door;
And his horse in the silence champed the grasses
Of the forest’s ferny floor:
And a bird flew up out of the turret,
Above the Traveller’s head:
And he smote upon the door again a second time;
‘Is there anybody there?’ he said.”
Questions:
1.Who is knocking on the door?
Ans- The Traveller is the one knocking on the door. He is seeking to find
someone inside the house but receives no response. He repeats his question, "Is
there anybody there?" indicating his uncertainty and persistence.
Ans- The horse makes a champing sound as it eats the grasses on the forest’s
ferny floor. The champing sound of the horse adds to the silence and stillness of
the scene, highlighting the lack of human presence.
4. What happens above the Traveller’s head?
Ans- A bird flies up out of the turret above the Traveller’s head. This sudden
movement contrasts with the stillness of the scene and draws attention to the
Traveller's presence at the door.
Ans- No, no one answers the Traveller's knock initially. He knocks and calls
out, "Is there anybody there?" but there is no response from inside the house,
leaving him standing alone and perplexed.
Extract 2
“But only a host of phantom listeners
That dwelt in the lone house then
Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight
To that voice from the world of men:
Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair,
That goes down to the empty hall,
Hearkening in an air stirred and shaken
By the lonely Traveller’s call.”
Questions:
1.Who are the listeners mentioned in the poem?
Ans- The listeners are described as a host of phantoms or ghosts. They dwell in
the lone house and silently listen to the Traveller’s voice, creating an eerie and
mysterious atmosphere.
2. What is the state of the house?
Ans- The phantom listeners stand thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark
stair. This image suggests that they are gathered on the staircase, listening
intently to the Traveller's calls, but remaining hidden and silent.
Ans- The listeners do not react outwardly to the Traveller’s call. They stand
silently, hearkening in an air stirred and shaken by his lonely call, emphasizing
their ghostly and elusive nature.
Ans- The atmosphere created by the description of the listeners is eerie and
mysterious. The quiet moonlight, the dark stair, and the silent phantoms
listening create a sense of unease and otherworldliness, highlighting the poem's
haunting mood.
