Letters to the editor, option 3.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in support of Mrs. Anne Other's letter regarding the introduction of

uniforms at Anytown High School, which followed your June 15th editorial. Mrs. Other

rightly emphasizes that the overwhelming majority—seventy-eight percent—in favor of

uniforms reflects the will of the community, a sentiment that should be respected in

accordance with the democratic values of our country. I would like to further elaborate on the

reasons why I, too, would have voted in favor of uniforms and why I stand by Mrs. Other’s

position.

Firstly, uniforms provide consistency and fairness, ensuring that all students,

regardless of their socioeconomic background, are dressed equally. This could help eliminate

classism among students and promote unity, reducing the likelihood of students being judged

or bullied based on their attire. This sense of equality fosters a positive school environment,

where students may feel safer and more accepted, allowing them to focus on their education

rather than on social pressures related to clothing.

Moreover, implementing uniforms promotes a sense of discipline and structure, and a

formal dress code prepares students for the professional world, where appropriate clothing is

often expected. As Mrs. Other mentions, students may not always learn these values at home,

and school is one of the few environments where these lessons can be taught. Wearing a

uniform creates a mindset of seriousness and respect for the educational setting, helping

students concentrate on their studies rather than their appearance.

I acknowledge that some might argue that uniforms inhibit students' creativity or their

freedom of self-expression, but this concern is not necessarily justified. While clothing is one

form of personal expression, it is far from the only way to showcase individuality. Students

can express their creativity through their thoughts, actions, ideas, and participation in various

activities, both academic and extracurricular. Encouraging students to express themselves in

these ways may actually nurture their intellectual and emotional growth more than clothing

ever could.

Another important point raised by Mrs. Other is the financial and environmental

aspect of uniforms. For many families, purchasing everyday clothes for teenagers can be

burdensome and contribute to the environmentally harmful trend of fast fashion. Uniforms,

on the other hand, are a more affordable and durable option. As Mrs. Other notes, uniforms

available at local shops are significantly cheaper than the frequent turnover of trendy clothes

that students often feel pressured to buy. Over time, uniforms can save families money, as

they can be worn throughout the school year and passed down to younger siblings, while also

helping to reduce the family’s carbon footprint.

In conclusion, I fully support the implementation of school uniforms at Anytown

High School. Uniforms not only promote discipline and professionalism but also reduce

financial strain on families and create a more inclusive and respectful learning environment.

Rather than stifling creativity, uniforms channel it into more meaningful forms of

self-expression. I strongly encourage the school to adopt this policy for the benefit of the

entire community.

Sincerely,

Lucía
