Morphology: a branch in biology that deals with the

from and structure of animals and plants.

Mathematical morphology is a powerful tool for image


analysis and processing. It is based on set theory and
uses mathematical operations to analyze the shape,
size, and structure of objects in an image. It can be used
to detect edges, identify objects, remove noise, and
enhance images.

The language of mathematical morphology is set theory.

Sets in mathematical morphology represent objects in


an image: binary image (0=black, 1=white)
The principal logic operations used in image processing
are: AND, OR, NOT

Other important logic operations: XOR, (NOT-AND)


Mathematical morphology has been used in various
fields such as medical imaging, remote sensing,
industrial automation, computer vision, robotics and
more. It is a powerful tool that can help us better
understand the structure of an image and extract useful
information from it.

Applications of morphological image filtering


• Boundaries extraction
• Skeletons
• Convex hull
• Morphological filtering
• Thinning
• Pruning

Morphological operations: logical transformations based


on comparison of pixel neighborhoods with a pattern.

Structuring element (SE): small to probe the image


under study.
Basic morphological operations: Erosion, Dilation
Dilation can bridge gaps and filling of holes of certain
shape and size, given by SE.

Erosion removal structures of certain shape and size,


given by SE.
Opening: removal of small protrusions, thin connections,
… etc.

Closing: removal holes
