BIM Context and Overview
What is the BIM:
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the holistic process of creating and managing
information for a built asset. Based on an intelligent model and enabled by a cloud platform,
BIM integrates structured, multi-disciplinary data to produce a digital representation of an
asset across its lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and operations.
Importance of BIM:
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the holistic process of creating and managing
information for a built asset. Based on an intelligent model and enabled by a cloud platform,
BIM integrates structured, multi-disciplinary data to produce a digital representation of an
asset across its lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and operations.
BIM Collaboration:
BIM is revolutionizing the way projects are delivered across industries, adding
intelligence and efficiency to project execution–and connecting teams, data, and
workflows at every stage of the project in the cloud for better project outcomes.

GIS Context and Overview
What is the GIS:
A geographic information system (GIS) is a system that creates, manages, analyzes, and
maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where
things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This
provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every
industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context.
The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better
management and decision making.

BIM and GIS interoperability
The Business Problem to Solve
As AEC, we are being challenged with creating innovative ways to manage and plan for
sustainable smart cities and infrastructure.
We have data and documents stored in traditional silos, in multiple formats, and
accessed by multiple desktop and web applications.
Solutions to solve for these challenges are often costly and one-off designs created
for a single project or organization.
GIS data is necessary for planning all operations regarding any infrastructure such as
rail networks, airports, bridges, roads, and so on. It helps put this infrastructure in the
context of its surroundings.

BIM and GIS interoperability
Why GIS and BIM together?
With the integration of GIS and BIM at the center of infrastructure projects – houses,
schools, roads, inter-modal transit facilities, drainage and energy networks, etc. – are no
longer planned, designed and built in isolation of everything around it.
While GIS helps understand how to put the infrastructure in that context, BIM
information is the vital element that allows for the designing and building process of
that infrastructure to take place.
BIM and GIS integration is the process of blending the BIM model into layers of the
geospatial context. So, designers can use GIS to get the most accurate information
about some areas where construction is to take place. If the area is prone to flooding,
designers will learn about it and influence a structure’s construction materials,
orientation, location, etc.

BIM and GIS interoperability
The reason why this matter is that GIS information can be applied to the country, regional,
and city scales. On the other hand, BIM data is closely tied to designing and constructing a
specific object, structure, or shape. By combining the two, you get the capability to build
any structure at an object level.
GIS adding makes the entire picture bigger by adding a smarter and larger environment
context, meaning that the object will become a part of the roads, utilities, and land in
that environment.
Integrating GIS and BIM data allows design and construction companies to collect
accurate and valuable data that will lead to much more effective and efficient design
and project management.

Benefit of BIM & GIS Integration
GIS and BIM Integration Leads to Smart Communities
Smart communities foster a data-rich environment. They make data accessible to
citizen, business, and government groups while meeting privacy needs and supporting
public safety. Data-rich communities work to actively or passively detect change. That
change can be in noise levels, transportation needs, or utility usage.
Most communities that are considered smart already use GIS. Many of these smart
communities are already actively investigating BIM-GIS integration because they realize
that a more streamlined flow of information between operational and construction life
cycle data will allow them to more accurately plan, fund, and maintain community
infrastructure assets.

A step to the truth direction
"Autodesk and Esri partnership"
Announced on November 15, 2017, the alliance partnership between Esri and Autodesk
helps to connect “Make Anything” with “The Science of Where” through more tightly
integrated BIM and GIS workflows, enhancing how infrastructure assets are planned,
designed, built, and operated. This alliance enables Esri and Autodesk to better deliver
on the promise of helping customers imagine, design and create a sustainable, more
resilient future.
Esri and Autodesk are committed to the development of a more seamless exchange
of spatial and attribute data typically captured in Esri’s GIS systems and the
information from 3D BIM models in Autodesk’s design software.

Case Study “ArcGIS GeoBIM”
For the first time, multiple systems are linked within a single web app that integrates all
of your data, streamlining how projects are completed using a location-based
geographic approach that provides the complete picture. GeoBIM provides a new
foundation for connecting the cloud platforms of Esri and Autodesk. It combines GIS
and BIM data, reducing the need for complex data handling and file conversion.
ArcGIS GeoBIM transforms AEC projects with geospatial context, allowing you to
manage risks, costs, and timelines by connecting the building information modeling
(BIM) process with location during the design, construction, and operation of large
capital infrastructure.
GeoBIM enables teams to integrate and visualize project data in a single, cloud-to-cloud
solution for making coordinated decisions with stakeholders.

Case Study “ArcGIS GeoBIM”
ArcGIS GeoBIM delivers an innovative, easy-to-use web-based experience for teams to
explore and collaborate on building information modeling (BIM) projects and issues, using
data from multiple systems in a geospatial context. Architecture, engineering,
construction (AEC) and operations teams can easily work with linked data and
documentation in configurable web apps to simplify communication and collaboration.

Conclusion
Adopting 3D BIM processes and GIS technologies will largely benefit the environment and
remediation industries. It will open the door for more-inclusive stakeholder engagement,
better design quality, and data-driven decision-making. Integration of BIM and GIS
provided more holistic and integrated workflows in the AEC industries to reduce cost and
meet growth demand.
