Dear Consumer:

The New Jersey Division of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DDHH) is the principal state agency established by
New Jersey Law (PL 1977, C. 166) on behalf of people of all ages who are deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-
blind. The division provides education, advocacy, and direct services to eliminate barriers and promote
increased accessibility to programs, services, and information routinely available to the state’s general
population.

As part of the division’s mandate to promote increased accessibility, DDHH manages and updates the attached
sign language interpreter referral list containing contact information for certified interpreters. Sign language
interpreting is a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act for persons who are
deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind. DDHH disseminates this list as a service to state programs, providers, and
the community to locate and hire certified sign language interpreters.

All interpreters on DDHH’s interpreter referral lists possess certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the
Deaf (RID). RID’s website can be viewed at www.rid.org. DDHH is unable to make any claim as to the skills
of any freelance interpreter for a specific assignment. Each freelance interpreter operates as a business entity.
When hiring an interpreter, please become familiar with the respective interpreter’s business policies i.e. fees,
payment, cancellation of services, etc.
