Development Discussion
Let’s see if you can still remember what happened in the story
about “The Little Prince.”
Instructions: You will be divided into two groups based on your
seating arrangement. Each group will receive five events in the
story that you have to work on as a group. After 5 minutes, each
group must have five representatives in front that will arrange
the events sequentially. The five representatives per group will
briefly explain the specific part of the story that they have.

DISCUSS

The Little Prince

Antoine de Saint-Exupery
(An excerpt)
Group 1:
It was then that the Fox appeared. “Good morning,” said
the Fox. “Good morning,” the Little Prince responded
politely although when he turned around, he saw nothing.

“Come and play with me,” proposed the Little Prince, “I’m
so unhappy.”

“I can’t play with you,” the Fox said, “I’m not tamed.”
Representative 1: This is where the excerpt begins. After the
Little Prince traveled from one planet to another, he then
reached the Earth and met the fox after meeting others.

“It’s an act too often neglected,” said the Fox. It means

to establish ties.”

“To me, you’re still nothing more than a little boy who’s
just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have
no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of
me. To you I’m nothing more than a Fox like a hundred
thousand other Foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall
need each other. To me, you’ll be unique in all the world.
To you, I shall be unique in all the world.”
Representative 2: After meeting a few unusual people from
different planets, including the fox, this part of the story shows
two people with a goal to have friends.

“Nothing is perfect,” sighed the Fox. But he came back to

his idea. “My life’s very monotonous,” he said. “I hunt
chickens; men hunt me. All chickens are just alike, and
all the men are just alike. And in consequence, I am a
little bored. But, if you tame me, it'll be as if the sun came
to me on my life.”
Representative 3: This part of the story shows the Fox’s
eagerness to be tamed, as if being tamed means the world to
others.

The Fox gazed at the Little Prince for a long time.

“Please---tame me!” he said.

I want to, very much, “the Little Prince replied. But I’ve
not much time. I’ve friends to discover, and a great many
things to understand.”
Representative 4: This is the time where the Fox emphasized
the importance of dedication or effort to build a relationship with

others.

“What must I do, to tame you?” asked the Little Prince.”

“You must be very patient,” replied the Fox. “First you’ll

sit down at a little distance from me – like that – in the
grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and
you will say nothing. Words are the source of
understanding. But you’ll sit a little closer to me, every
day…”
Representative 5: Evidently, the Little Prince decided to tame
the Fox, or to create a tie. So, he listens very carefully to what
the Fox has to say.

Group 2:
It would have been better to come back at the same
hour,” said the fox. “If for example, you came at four
o’clock in the afternoon, then at three o’clock I shall begin
to be happy.”
Representative 6: This is the time that the Fox started to talk
about the importance of rites.

So the Little Prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of
his departure drew near--- “Ah,” said the Fox, “I shall cry.”

“It’s your own fault,” said the Little Prince. “I never wished
you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you…”
Representative 7: This is the day that the Little Prince has to
go. Their conversation mirrors the separation between two
special persons.

The Little Prince went away, to look again at the roses.

“You’re not all at all like my rose,” he said. “As yet you
are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed
no one. You’re like my fox when I first know him. He was
only a Fox like a hundred thousand Foxes.
Representative 8: This time, the Fox gradually opens the eyes
of the Little Prince about the importance of his rose, that one
becomes special if we pay attention and treasure something that
is our own.

“Goodbye,” said the Fox. “And now here’s my secret, a

very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can
see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Representative 9: This is nearing the end of the story, when the
Fox gave an important life lesson to the Little Prince.

“Men have forgotten this truth,” said the Fox. But you
must not forget it. You become responsible
Representative 10: The final part of the story is when the Little
Prince realized the
essence of “taming”
that the Fox asked
him earlier in the
story. From there, the
Little Prince goes
back to his planet.

Assimilation REFLECT

Valuing
Beyond the level of the text, what personal meaning did you get
about friendship and life based on the text you read.

Seasonal friend is not a myth. There are friends that we meet

at a certain time, and as time passes, we all move with our life
on our own. This is the same with the fox.

Open-mindedness is the first step to becoming teachable.

There are times that I can’t accept changes easily, especially
learnings that meant to correct my old self. Change can be scary
at times, but like the Little Prince, maybe it is the time to reflect
and get something meaningful from these experiences and
learnings.”
