Homework 1
1. A point moves in the plane xy according to the law x = at, y = at (1— αt), where a
and α are positive constants, and t is time. Find:
a. The equation of the point's trajectory y (x), plot this function.
b. The velocity v and the acceleration a of the point as functions of time.
c. The moment t0 at which the velocity vector forms an angle 𝜋/4 with the
acceleration vector.
2. A body is thrown from the surface of the Earth at an angle α to the horizontal with
the initial velocity v0. Assuming the air drag to be negligible, find:
a. The time of motion.
b. The maximum height of ascent and the horizontal range; at what value of
the angle α they will be equal to each other.
c. The equation of trajectory y (x), where y and x are displacements of the
body along the vertical and the horizontal respectively.
d. The curvature radii of trajectory at its initial point and at its peak.
3. A cannon fires successively two shells with velocity v0 = 250 m/s; the first at the
angle α1 = 60° and the second at the angle α2 = 45° to the horizontal, the azimuth
being the same. Neglecting the air drag, find the time interval between firings
leading to the collision of the shells.
4. A point A is located on the rim of a wheel of radius R = 0,5 m which rolls without
slipping along a horizontal surface with velocity v = 1,0 m/s. Find:
a. The modulus and the direction of the acceleration vector of the point A.
b. The total distance s traversed by the point A between the two successive
moments at which it touches the surface.
5. A solid body rotates with angular velocity ω = at.i+ bt2.j, where a = 0,5 rad/s2,
b = 0,06 rad/s2, and i and j are the unit vectors of the x and y axes. Find:
a. The moduli of the angular velocity and the angular acceleration at the
moment t = 10 s.
b. The angle between the vectors of the angular velocity and the angular
acceleration at that moment.
6. Two blocks connected by a rope of negligible mass
are being dragged by a horizontal force (Fig 1).
Suppose F = 68 N, m1 = 12 kg, m2 = 18 kg, and the
Figure 1
coefficient of kinetic friction between each block and
the surface is 0,1.
a. Draw a free-body diagram for each block.
b. Determine the acceleration of the system.
c. Determine the tension T in the rope.
7. Consider the three connected objects shown in Fig 2. Assume first that the
inclined plane is frictionless and that the system is in equilibrium. In terms of m,
g, and α, find:
a. The mass M.
b. The tensions.
c. Now assume that the value of M is double the
value found in part (a). Find the acceleration of
each object and the tensions.
d. Next, assume that the coefficient of static Figure 2
friction between m and 2m and the inclined
plane is ms and that the system is in equilibrium.
e. Find the maximum value of M and the minimum value of M. Compare the
values of T2 when M has its minimum and maximum values.
8. A block of mass m = 2 kg is released from rest at h = 0,5
m above the surface of a table, at the top of a α = 30°
incline as shown in Fig 3. The frictionless incline is fixed
on a table of height H = 2 m.
a. Determine the acceleration of the block as it slides
down the incline.
b. What is the velocity of the block as it leaves the Figure 3
incline?
c. How far from the table will the block hit the floor?
d. What time interval elapses between when the block is released and when it
hits the floor?
e. Does the mass of the block affect any of the above calculations?
9. In Fig 3, the incline has mass M and is fastened to the stationary horizontal tabletop.
The block of mass m is placed near the bottom of the incline and is released with a
quick push that sets it sliding upward. The block stops near the top of the incline as
shown in the figure and then slides down again, always without friction. Find the
force that the tabletop exerts on the incline throughout this motion in terms of m, M,
and α.
10. Two blocks of mass 3,5 kg and 8,0 kg are connected by
a massless string that passes over a frictionless pulley
(Fig 4). The inclines are frictionless. Find:
a. The magnitude of the acceleration of each block.
b. The tension in the string. Figure 4
