Tutorial Sheet = 4 Instructor : A. Laskar
1. A 500 mm long, 16 mm diameter rod is Py
observed to increase in the length by 300
m, and to decrease in the diameter by 2.4
m when subjected to an axial load of 25
kN. Determine the modulus of elasticity, 50 mm Px
Poisson's ratio and shear modulus.
2. A piece of 50 x 250 x 10 mm steel plate is
Fig. 1
subjected to uniformly distributed 250 mm
stresses along its edges as shown in Fig.
1. (a) If Px = 100 kN and Py = 200 kN
then determine the change in thickness of
plate. (b) Determine the Px alone which y
will cause the same change in thickness as
in (a). Let E=200 GPa and =0.25. Z = 10 mm

3. A structural steel plate with E = 210 GPa

and =0.3 has the dimension as shown in
Fig. 2 before loading. The plate is then Y = 200 mm
subjected to a state of plane stress in xy
plane with x=150 MPa. For what value x
of stress y will the dimension Y of the
z
plate remain unchanged? What are the X = 300 mm Fig. 2
final dimension of the plate in the other
two directions? y
4. The steel block shown in Fig. 3 is
subjected to a uniform pressure on all its 40 mm
C
faces. Knowing that the change in length
of edge AB is -24 m determine (a) the D x
change in length of the other two edges, A
(b) the pressure applied to the faces of the z 80 mm B 60 mm

block. Let E=200 GPa and =0.29.
20 MN/m2
5. For the state of plane stress shown in Fig.
40 MN/m2
4, determine the corresponding x, y and
40 MN/m2
xy. E=80 GPa and =0.35.

6. The bar shown in Fig. 5 is cut from a 10

mm thick piece of steel. At the change in
cross-section at A and B the approximate
stress concentration factors are 2.25 and 2,
respectively. What is the maximum force F
the bar can be subjected? Take allowable
stress for axial tension in the bar as 150 MPa. Fig. 5
