As a new nurse educator, the internal factor influencing curriculum development that I

feel is most important is financial resources. Financial resources are one of the biggest internal

factors that play a crucial role in curriculum development by affecting budget decision, resource

allocation, and program prioritization . These resources are used to invest in learning materials,

such as simulation labs, faculty training, program design, and infrastructure which is important

for development of effective curricula. “Funding limits can constrain the curriculum design, and

adequate resources are essential for successful implementation” (Iwasiw et al., 2020, p. 164).

Educational facilities often work within tight budgets which can limit the number of courses they

can provide or the necessary materials. Funding also has significant implications for curriculum

implementation and educational quality (Erwin et al., 2024). Nursing schools with more robust

funding can offer a more diverse curricula that are also enriched with advanced resources, such

as simulation labs that mimic a clinical setting (Keating & DeBoor, 2023). These are important

education tools in nursing education as these simulations allow nursing students to apply their

knowledge and skills to a real clinical scenario that they would see in their nursing practice

without any harm to a patient. These labs cost a substantial amount of money so some nursing

schools may not be able to implement them into their curriculum if they do not have the

available funds. Insufficient funding can additionally lead to outdated curricula that fail to meet

professional standards and/or healthcare workforce need (Erwin et al., 2024).

The external factor influencing curriculum development that I consider most important is

professional standards and trends. According to Iwasiw et al. (2020), “health care, nursing

practice, and nursing education standards all affect professional practice and the education of

nurses” (p. 172). The curriculum a nursing school follows should respond to the local context

and the health needs of the population. Nursing curriculum needs to keep up with trends in
patient care protocols so that new nurses coming into the field understand how new approaches

can improve patient outcomes. Nurses also work within a scope of practice according to the state

they reside in and must also pass the NCLEX to become licensed so nursing curriculum should

be made in regard to these professional standards. Additionally, in 2021, the American

Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) revised its standards to focus on competency-based

education as its foundation to nursing education. Implementation of the new Essentials “will

occur over the next several years” leading to substantial revisions in curriculum, learning

activities, and learner assessment in nursing schools (Giddens et al., 2022). This switch to

competency-based education is largely due to advances in medical research and treatment, shifts

in healthcare delivery, shifting population demographics, informatics and technology, addressing

healthcare inequalities, and changes in healthcare economics and health policy (Giddens et al.,

2022). Nursing curricula must be developed or revised to ensure that nursing students and the

nursing workforce is well-prepared for healthcare’s evolving future. Curriculum development in

nursing must align with the current and future needs of healthcare while also arming nursing

graduates with a wide range of skills and competencies they will need as they begin their nursing

careers and in the coming years. These AACN Essentials will change nursing curriculum around

the country over the next several years and will play a big role in curriculum development and

revision.
