Telemetry is the collection of data or other measurements at remote points and their automatic transmission at

receiving points. The term telemetry is commonly used in wireless data transfer mechanisms like radio, ultrasonic
or infrared systems but it also encompasses data transferred over other media like use of a telephone or computer
network, optical link and power line carriers. Signifiant applications of telemetry include meteorology, oil and gas
industries, defense space and resource exploration, motor racing etc.

What is Xbee?

Xbee is the brand name of a popular family of wireless connectivity RF modules from Digi International. These
modules are based on IEEE 802.15.4 – 2003 standard designed for point to point and star communications. Xbee
modules can operate in either transparent mode and packet based API mode with a frequency of 2.4GHz in ISM
band and uses Direct sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) for interference immunity. Xbee modules offer an optimal
data rate of 250 kbps with an outdoor range of several miles. Xbee is being used in varous applications in the
recent years like home automation, wireless sensor networks, industrial control systems and embedding sensing
etc.

Why we Choose Xbee over other?

Xbee has various competitors like Lora and NRFSeries modules like NRF24L01. So why Xbee?

One of the most significant advantages of using Xbee is the range which can go upto several miles without
affecting its data rate which makes it suitable for its use in our telemetry system .

Second advantage of using xbee is its easy parameters setup through the use of XCTU software and its easy
programmability through the use of Micropython which eliminates the need of an external microcontroller. These
tools basically simplify functionality, configuration and testing of xbee.

Third advantage is its intrinsic IOT security with DigiTrustFence and numerous antenna options according to the
user needs for different ranges.

Overall Xbee excels in all aspects be it security, data rate, range, ease of programmability, setup and testing which
makes it more efficient for its use in our telemetry system.
