EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROBLEMS

1. In a rural mandal with 30,000 population, the following data was


recorded in the year 2009.

Total no. of death : 360
Deaths of infants<7 days of age : 33
Deaths of infants between 7-28 days of age : 24
Deaths of infants between 28 days – 1 year : 28
No. of still births : 10
No. of maternal deaths : 6

Calculate the various vital statistical rates and comment.

2. In a town with 2,00,000 population , the following data was

Calculate the various vital statistical rates and comment.

3. In a rural area with 1 lakh population there were 4000 births, & 400
infant deaths in the year 2015. 120 infants died in the first 28 days of life &
60 died in the first week of life. There were 220 still births in the same year.
Calculate infant mortality rate, neonatal mortality rate, peri-natal mortality
rate, post-neonatal mortality rate.

4. In a rural mandal with 40,000 populations the no. of T.B cases as on


1st January 2009 was 160. In the same year, 40 new cases of T.B were
diagnosed while 16 cases had died and 50 cases were declared cured.
Calculate the following rates :

a. Point prevalence rate as on 1st Jan, 2009.


b. Period prevalence rate for the year 2009.
c. Incidence rate for the year 2009.
d. Death rate due to T.B for the year 2009.
e. Case fatality rate due to T.B for the year 2009.

5. In a rural mandal with 50,000 populations the no. of T.B cases as on


1st January 2009 was 225. In the same year, 60 new cases of T.B were
diagnosed while 20 cases had died and 80 cases were declared cured.
Calculate the following rates :

a. Point prevalence rate as on 1st Jan. 2009.


b. Period prevalence rate for the year 2009.
c. Incidence rate for the year 2009.
d. Death rate due to T.B for the year 2009.
e. Case fatality rate due to T.B for the year 2009.

6. In a community health center with a population of 1,00,000 the


health workers collected 3,725 blood slides from fever cases during home
visits. I the same year, 3,275 blood slides were collected from OPD. On
examination 200 slides were positive for P.vivax, 100 positive for P.
falciparum. Calculate ABER, API, AFI,SPR & SFR. Suggest control measures
under National Anti Malarial Program.

7. In a PHC with a population of 50,000 the health workers collected


6000 blood slides from fever cases dring active surveillance. On
examination 60 slides were positive for P.Vivax, 5 positive for P.falciparum
and 4 for both P.vivax & P.falciparum. Calculate ABER,API,AFI,SPR & SFR.
Suggest control measures under National Anti- Malarial Program.

8. A cohort study was conducted to find out the effect of smoking in

10. An intra-dermal test with a newly developed filarial antigen was


claimed to be effective in finding out micro-filarial carriers by inventors. Out
of 1000 persons injected intra-dermally with antigen the test was positive in
600 persons of whom 450 were really having micro filariae in their peripheral
blood smear. However the test was negative in 50 persons who also had
micro-filariae in their peripheral blood smear. Find out the sensitivity,
specificity and positive predictive value of the test.
