Use a semi colon to connect two independent clauses that are closely
related to the meaning
Ex. I missed the bus; I guess I'm walking to school
The two sentences may be independent clauses but the semicolon connects
them for a smoother slow
colon :
Use a colon to introduce a list of sentence, separate independent clauses, and show
emphasis.
Emphasis: The weapon to defeat the beast was something nobody expected: love.
Introduce a list of sentence: You will need to bring three things to the party: some
food, something to drink, and a small gift for the hostess.

1. Join two or more independent words to turn them into a single adjective before a noun
2. Join three or more independent words to turn them into a complex compound word
3. Write out the last two place values (in the ten and one columns) of a compound number.
4. Avoid confusion between similar-sounding words or stop two or more identical letters from
being placed next to each other.
5. Attach the prefixes ex-, self-, and all-.
6. Attach the suffix -elect
7. Attach any prefix to a capitalized word
8. Attach singular letters to words or letters to numbers
