Academic and Business Communication in the Foreign Language

Munavvar Asgarova was born on January 16, 1987 in the city of Ganja. In 2005-
2009 she studied her bachelor specialization degree on Philology (English) at Azerbaijan
University of Languages and accordingly in 2009-2011 her master’s specialization
degree on Linguistics at Ganja State University.
Since 2011 she has been working as a senior teacher at Azerbaijan State Agrarian
University.

Prerequisite
According to the schedule prepared by the teachers of Language Department,
classes are held on the appointed day and time. If the time of the classes changes, the
teacher will provide relevant information to the students. During the distance learning
period, the online platform determined by ASAU will be used.
This syllabus is the main document covering all the requirements and deadlines of
the course, it should be read thoroughly and the requirements of this document should be
followed during the semester.
Teaching the subject requires initial knowledge in the direction of formation and
development of cooperative relations in cooperatives in the agricultural field. Students
are recommended to strengthen their knowledge in these two directions in order to
achieve the planned learning outcomes.

Course overview:
This course is designed for non-native speakers learning English at an ABC and
Elementary levels to acquire and develop English language knowledge and skills.

Course objectives:
The main objectives of the syllabus are:
To teach the students pronunciation, reading, listening, speaking and writing. At this
level of language learners acquire the knowledge of grammatical structures and functions
(e.g. sentence types, tenses, voice, parts of speech, word order, expressing possibility,
obligation, necessity, prohibition, criticism; expressing preferences, making assumptions;
asking for/ refusing/giving permission; making offers, suggestions, etc.) They need a
fundamental vocabulary to fulfill the above-mentioned functions in roles, topics and
discussions.
The students are taught to be able to converse on more advanced topics (people,
jobs, places to visit, festivals\celebrations environment, effective communication, the
natural world, education, entertainment, transport, crime, information technology, etc.).
The students learn to understand a spoken language. Listening texts include
monologues and interactive speeches. Learners are taught to focus on understanding the
gist, the main points, look for detail or specific information, and deduce the meaning.
The students are offered adapted/instructional reading material and are encouraged
to learn to use different strategies for different reading purposes: identifying the main

points in a text, looking for detail, locating specific information in a text, understanding a
text structure, etc.
The students are expected to learn to produce written texts of various types:
formal/informal/transactional letters, argumentative essays (expressing opinions, for and
against), narration (story writing), memoranda and notes.

Teaching and learning methods:


Teaching, learning and assessment are designed to enable students to achieve the
course objectives described above. While part of any session is likely to involve direct
teaching, the emphasis is on student participation and teachers should encourage students
to take an active part in discussion and in tasks.

Course materials:
There will be used adapted materials in class, related to the topics studied. Topic-
based self-access resources (authentic print, audio and video), dictionaries and grammar
materials are also available.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course the students will have been able to converse on different topics,
on intercultural communication, and to communicate effectively in an oral presentation,
writing essays in the field of Veterinary.

Structure of seminars:
The lessons will be carried out in the form of seminars. Seminar topics and a list of
references will be provided for students in advance. Each seminar is given two hours.
Students are expected to actively participate in the lesson, including group and pair
works.
Recommendations for students: Students should not be discouraged to ask
questions, express their opinions and make mistakes.

Exam:

The exam will be taken in the test form. The test consists of 50 questions. Each question
gives one point. If you do not agree with the exam score, you can appeal to the Appeals
Commission established by the University for this purpose. If the Appeals Board finds
your complaint valid, you may be given the opportunity to retake the exam.

Assessment:
Course grades will be determined by interval (midterm) exam scores, seminar
scores, and final exam scores, as outlined in the table below:
A student who does not attend more than 25 percent of the classroom hours
allocated for the subject is not admitted to the exam.

Ethics and plagiarism


The teaching of the lesson is based on general ethical values in education and the
principles of humanism, democracy, equality, secularism, and efficiency.
Students are advised to refrain from using other people's ideas during the teaching
of the subject without specifying (referencing) a source, describing it as the work of the
eye and giving inaccurate information. The mentioned cases are considered plagiarism.
The issues of ethics and plagiarism in the teaching process are regulated by the
University's "Internal Disciplinary Rules" and "Internal Rules on Anti-Plagiarism and
Academic Ethics". Both documents can be found on the university's official website.

Result
At the end of the course, the student should know at least 5,000-7,000 words and
phrases and acquire the necessary speech skills. He should be able to exchange ideas and
convey his opinion on the following topics related to the specialty.
By the end, students should learn:
- People, professions, excursions, natural disasters, cultural understanding, sports,
environment, education, entertainment, energy, etc. talk and talk about topics.
- Revealing oneself in oral speech: asking, rejecting, allowing, offering
- Write an essay
