Explain.
 Process Control Block (PCB) is an important data structure used by the Operating
System (OS) to manage and control the execution of processes. It is also known as
Task Control Block (TCB) in some operating systems. A PCB contains all the
necessary information about a process, including its process state, program
counter, memory allocation, open files, and CPU scheduling information.

2 Explain direct and indirect communications of message passing systems.


 Direct Communication : In the Direct Communication, each process that wants to
communicate must explicitly name the recipient or sender of the communication. In
this scheme, the send and receive primitives are defined as follows :
Send (P, message) – Send a message to process P.
Receive (Q, message) – Receive a message from process Q.
Indirect Communication : With Indirect Communication, the messages are sent to
and received from mailboxes. A mailbox can be viewed abstractly as, an object into which
messages can be placed by processes and from which messages can be removed.
The send and receive primitives are defined as follows :
Send (A, message) – Send a message to mailbox A.
Received (A, message) – Receive a message from mailbox A.

3 Explain the difference between long term and short term and medium
term schedulers

 Short-Term Scheduler:
The short-term scheduler selects processes from the ready queue that are residing
in the main memory and allocates CPU to one of them. Thus, it plans the
scheduling of the processes that are in a ready state. It is also known as a CPU
scheduler. As compared to long-term schedulers, a short-term scheduler has to be
used very often i. e. the frequency of execution of short-term schedulers is high.
Medium-term Scheduler:
The medium-term scheduler is required at the times when a suspended or
swapped-out process is to be brought into a pool of ready processes. A running
process may be suspended because of an I/O request or by a system call. Such a
suspended process is then removed from the main memory and is stored in a
swapped queue in the secondary memory in order to create a space for some other
process in the main memory.
Long-term Scheduler:
The long-term scheduler works with the batch queue and selects the next batch job
to be executed. Thus it plans the CPU scheduling for batch jobs. Processes, which
are resource intensive and have a low priority are called batch jobs. These jobs are
executed in a group or bunch. For example, a user requests for printing a bunch of
files.
4 Discuss common ways of establishing relationship between user and
kernel thread.

 User-level threads and kernel-level threads are two different


approaches to implementing thread management in an operating
system.
User-level threads are managed entirely by the application, without any
involvement from the operating system kernel. The application
manages the creation, scheduling, and synchronization of threads,
using libraries such as pthreads or WinThreads. User-level threads are
generally faster to create and switch between than kernel-level threads,
as there is no need to switch to kernel mode or perform costly context
switches.
However, user-level threads have some limitations. For example, if one
thread blocks, the entire process may block, as the operating system is
unaware of the thread’s status. Additionally, user-level threads cannot
take advantage of multiple CPUs or CPU cores, as only one user-level
thread can be executing at a time.
Kernel-level threads, on the other hand, are managed by the operating
system kernel. Each thread is a separate entity with its own stack,
register set, and execution context. The kernel handles thread
scheduling, synchronization, and management, allowing multiple
threads to execute simultaneously on different CPUs or cores.

5 Explain multithreading models.


 Multithreading allows the application to divide its task into individual
threads. In multi-threads, the same process or task can be done by the
number of threads, or we can say that there is more than one thread to
perform the task in multithreading. With the use of multithreading,
multitasking can be achieved. The main drawback of single threading
systems is that only one task can be performed at a time, so to
overcome the drawback of this single threading, there is multithreading
that allows multiple tasks to be performed. In an operating system,
threads are divided into the user-level thread and the Kernel-level
thread. User-level threads handled independent form above the kernel
and thereby managed without any kernel support. On the opposite
hand, the operating system directly manages the kernel-level threads.
Nevertheless, there must be a form of relationship between user-level
and kernel-level threads.

Client-Server Network, Clients and server are differentiated, Specific
server and clients are present. In Client-Server Network, Centralized
server is used to store the data because its management is centralized.

Peer-to-Peer Network: This model does not differentiate the clients and
the servers, In this each and every node is itself client and server. In
Peer-to-Peer Network, Each and every node can do both request and
respond for the services.
Peer-to-peer networks are often created by collections of 12 or fewer
machines. All of these computers use unique security to keep their data,
but they also share data with every other node.
In peer-to-peer networks, the nodes both consume and produce
resources. Therefore, as the number of nodes grows, so does the peer-
to-peer network’s capability for resource sharing. This is distinct from
client-server networks where an increase in nodes causes the server to
become overloaded.
