4 Using hyphens

Rule
1 You use hyphens to join two or more words together to make a
compound word.

Compound nouns Compound adjectives Compound verbs

my father-in-law, a action-packed, free- to ice-skate, to check-in,
break-in, a passer- range, well-known, to binge-watch, to spot-
by, my dry-cleaning high-tech, deep-fried check, to rubber-stamp
The hyphen in a compound word helps make your meaning clear.
Think about difference in meaning between these two sentences:
•• There is a man eating shark.
•• There is a man-eating shark.

2 You use hyphens to add the prefixes re– and co– to words starting with
the same vowel, and to attach the prefix ex– when it means former.

re– co– ex–

re-enter, re-educate, ex-husband, ex-soldier,
co-operate, co-ordinate
re-use ex-president
Some words with prefixes also need a hyphen to make sense.
•• I had to de-ice the freezer. (de-ice not deice)

abc hyphen: a punctuation mark (-) used to link parts of a word together
compound word: a word made up of two or more words joined
together
prefix: a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of word to
change its meaning

Add the hyphens

Here is the script of a radio news report. It explains lots of details, but the
writer has forgotten to use any hyphens.
Add the hyphens in the correct places to make the meaning clearer.

BREAKING NEWS

There has been a break in at the home of Orville Finlay, the ex President of
Liban. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a man managed to evade the
high tech security of the ex President’s seaside villa.

Fortunately, only Orville Finlay was at home at the time: the rest of his
family had gone ice skating. There was a loud argument and scuffle between
the two men before the security forces stormed the ten bedroom home.

The intruder is described as having green eyes and light brown hair. He
has been named as Devin Hawkins, the ex President’s own brother in law.
Hawkins was arrested at the scene. Police say he is co operating, but he
is likely to be given a two year sentence in jail.

Ex President Finlay is hoping to be re elected in the vote this summer.

Meanwhile, he is remaining at the villa to recover from the ordeal.
