PRESS RELEASE
Background
The Government Health Services Commission (GHSC) was established by an Act of
Parliament No. 14 of 2002 to provide suppoft for the administration and management of
the Government Health Service in Malawi. According to the Act, GHSC has power to
exercise disciplinary control over persons holding or acting in any office in the
Government Health Service. In order to exercise this power, GHSC in collaboration with
other stakeholders has organized an assessment of various Central and District Hospitals,
Among others, GHSC wishes to assess the way health care workers relate with and serue
the people in various health facilities and communities in the country. This assessment
will be a two-tier process. On the one hand, GHSC would interact with the healthcare
workers and management of the health facilities and District Councils. The second tier
involves consultations with the members of the public, including patients and survivors.
Scope of Submissions
GHSC is calling for submissions of feedback from the general public on perceptions of
service delivery and conduct of health care workers in various health facilities or
communities. The required feedback could be in form of complaints or suggestions
regarding service delivery and conduct of the health care'workers and shouldlndicate
whether the nearest health facility has;
a. systems and processes for handling complainants and suggestions from patients
and other users of services of your facilities;
b' voice and accountability charters to aide patients and other service users to
demand their rights and exercise their responsibilities towards service provision by
your facilities;
c. professional disciplinary issues including staff punctuality, absenteeism, laxity,
pilferages, theft, work culture, attitudes towards patients and other service users
at your facilities; and
d. effective citizen-duty bearer interfacing structures or platforms (such as Health
Centre Management Committees) to facilitate citizen participation in service
delivery and community-based monitoring.
GHSC also invites the general public to make suggestions on the conduct of health care
workers and service delivery,
