With its compact modular design and high performance, the SIMATIC S7-
1200 is suitable for a multitude of automation applications, while being very
cost effective. Its extensive instruction set enables the SIMATIC S7-1200 to
solve small to medium-sized automation applications.

The perfect match of SIMATIC S7-1200 PLC with the new SIMATIC HMI
Basic Panels ensures particularly efficient and easy development and
commissioning of automation tasks.

SIMATIC STEP 7 Basic is the engineering system for SIMATIC S7-1200 with
intuitive handling features and includes SIMATIC WinCC Basic for
configuration of the HMI Basic Panels.

The SIMATIC S7-1200 PLC was presented together with STEP 7 Basic V10.5
at the Hannover Messe 2009.

S7-1200 Signal Modules

SIMATIC S7-1200 can be modularly expanded with Signal Modules in a
central configuration. This enables a flexible and space-saving adaptation to
any application. At the time of market introduction we can already provide a
wide range of different analog or digital signal modules. The portfolio will be
successively increased in due course.

S7-1200 Communication Modules

Additionally, each SIMATIC S7-1200 controller can be expanded with up to 3
different communication modules. In addition to the integral Ethernet interface
this results in a wide variety of connection options, e.g. application specific
protocols, such as USS or Modbus.

Compatibility and necessary components

STEP 7 Basic
The new SIMATIC S7-1200 controller family is programmed with STEP 7
Basic V10.5 and higher (see entry ID 35786422). Programming a SIMATIC
S7-1200 CPU with older STEP 7 versions or with STEP 7-Micro/WIN is not
possible.

SIMATIC Memory Card (NOT mandatory to operate a CPU)

A SIMATIC Memory Card can be used to expand the CPU loading memory, to
load the application software or to perform a firmware update.

Compatibility
The SIMATIC S7-1200 family of controllers is not compatible in software and
hardware with the existing SIMATIC S7-200 family of controllers.
