VERBS

A Verb expresses action or Occurrence or State of being


Action: An Action Verb tells you what a person/animal/thing does
1) We study grammar
2) The fielder threw the ball to the bowler
3) John is knocking the door
4) Sita is walking to office
5) The kid is waving you goodbye
6) Little Rahul is jumping

Occurrence:
1) The bomb exploded loudly
2) It rained heavily last week

State of being: As the verb says, this type of verb tells you what
something/someone is/are.
1) I am a teacher
2) This is a grammar class
3) This is a booklet on verbs
4) Her students are verry intelligent

Helping Verbs: come before the main verb in a sentence.it


cannot stand on its own.It helps the main verb to identify the
tense or sometimes even changing the meaning odf the main
verb.
There are 23 Helping verbs in English
Am , Is , Are, Was , Were , Being, Been, Be , Have , Has, Had, Do,
Does, Did, Shall, Should, Will, would, May, Might, Must, Can,
Could.
1)Primary Helping Verbs: used to mainly change the tense or
the voice of the main verb and in framing questions and
negative construction.
Do, Have, Be and their variants
Eg: Do you know how to use this cell.
I do not know how to use this cell phone.
Where will you be at that time.
She is being helped by her teacher.
We have come here before.
Have we come here before.

used to express ability
Eg:I can teach
Talk about permission
Eg: Can I use your phone

Refers to theoretical possibility


Eg: She can win the elections

Makes Request
Eg: Can you switch off the fan

Express offers
Eg: Can I drop you at the bus stop.

Talk about rights / privileges :


Eg: She can vote from next year.

Talk about what is permitted by conscience / feelings :


Eg: We can hardly blame the caption.

COULD:

Express an ability in the past


Eg: Two years ago I could touch my toes without bending my
knees.

Talk about some past / future permissions


Eg: Could I borrow your book for a minute.

Express a present possibility


Eg: It could rain tonight

Offer suggestions
Eg: We could take this issue to the Principal.

MAY

Ask for / grant permission


Eg: May I have two minutes of your time? Yes! You may.

Talk about possibility / uncertainty


Eg: There may come a time when we have a drug.

MIGHT

Talk about a possibility ( lesser than that expressed by MAY )


Eg: He might tell us the truth.

Make a suggestion
Eg: You might go for a blue shirt.

WILL

Express a wish, request and desire ( less polite usage than


would and could)
Eg: Will you help me with this?

Make a prediction / assumption


Eg: I think I will win the match

Give out an order


Eg: You will clean your room before you leave.

Convey willingness / promise


Eg: I will help you finish your assignment.
WOULD

Express request ( more polite than WILL and less polite than
COULD)
Eg: Would you help me with this?

Talk about past habbits


Eg: She would to paly every Sunday.

Make offers / extend invites


Eg: Would you like some buscuits?

Convey desires politely


Eg: I wish you would stay here for a week.

SHALL

In formal situations as passing orders, explaining processes


Eg: There shall be no exceptions to this rule.

When asking for permissions / offering suggestions


Eg: Shall we meet after lunch?

To convey promises / volunteerism


Eg: I shall take of that.

SHOULD

Convey an expectation / opinion


Eg: Now that the exam duration has been increased, it
should give more time for students to plan their writing.
Give recommendations / advice
Eg: People with high cholesterol should avoid fried food.

Talk about obligations


Eg: We should be in time for this meeting

MUST

When expressing something you are not sure about


Eg: She must have told you that today is a holiday.

To convey some strong necessity


Eg: She hasn’t talked to her parents for months. She must
call them immediately.

When offering strong suggestions


Eg: You must take her with you or you will lose the way.

NEED NOT

To convey something that is not necessary


Eg: You need not be present at the function.

USED TO

To express some discontinued habit


Eg: She used to take a long walk along the beach every day.
OUGHT TO

Convey an expectation
Eg: If you enjoy good music, then his concert ought to really
entertain you.

Give advice / make recommendations


Eg: You ought to take your driving lessons seriously.
