p
1 Leader (M1) Opening Hi, did you guys hear about the incident in our neighborhood yesterday? There
was a mother beating her child in the middle of a department store and my aunt
Elaine Franklin witnessed it.
M2 Yes, last night I passed by the department store and heard a very loud baby cry.
M3 Really? Poor boy! What exactly happened?
2 Reader Read the Elaine Franklin is shopping by herself in a large department store. She notices a
(M2) question woman shopping near her who seems to be very angry at her two-year-old child.
Suddenly the mother starts slapping the child very hard in the face and shouting,
"If you don't stop crying, I'll hit you even harder!"
M1 So pitiful! what happened to him then?
3 Reader Read the The young child screams, “Mama, stop!" and keeps crying. The woman starts to
(M2) question slap the child again. Ms. Franklin doesn't know the woman, but she is very
worried about the child. Do you think that Ms. Franklin has an obligation to try to
stop the mother from hitting the child?
4 Summariser Rephrase I see what you mean. Ms. Franklin witnessed a mother physically abusing her
(M3) the topic child in public. This is a pretty sensitive situation. I want to know what you think
about this issue.
5 M1 M1’s I believe that she has an absolute duty to stop the mother from hitting the child.
opinion The first reason is that children are vulnerable and need to be protected by
adults.. The second reason is that although there may be some risk to the person
who intervenes like arguing and fighting, it is insignificant compared to the
potential risk to the child. Therefore, if I were her, I would immediately find a
way to stop the mother from hitting her child.
How do you think?
5 M2 M2’s If I were her, I would not stop the mother from disciplining her child by beating
opinion her. Because I do not think she has the obligation to save the child. The first
reason is that each family from different cultures has a different way of educating
their children. Who knows, maybe that child is a naughty child and only beatings
can teach him? If that is not the case, My second reason is sympathy for the
psychology of a mother, perhaps she is nursing an extended family and Every
mother has a lot of anxiety and pressure, so it is inevitable that there will be
moments of anger.
5 M3 M3’s I understand your opinions. I think like this, actually it depends on the situation
opinion that she can choose whether to help the child or not. First, it is true that she has
no legal obligation to intervene, but as a human being, witnessing such a
situation, she also has a moral obligation. Second, she needs to observe the
situation carefully, then make a decision to avoid unnecessary arguments. Third,
if she wants to help, she should act calmly and wisely.
6 Reader Read the It’s right! So, how can Elaine Franklin stop the mother from hitting her child?
(M2) question
7 Summariser Rephrase yes, we have to find some ways to help her stop this child abuse
(M3) the topic
8 M1 M1’s If I were her, I would call the attention of people around so that she would be
opinion embarrassed and stop. Then I would inform the security guard or the police to
stop her.
How about you?
8 M2 M2’s If it were me, I would call the authorities and not intervene directly. I would let
opinion the authorities handle this matter.
8 M3 M3’s I think the matter should be handled quietly and peacefully so I would talk slowly
opinion to help the mother calm down, then ask about the difficulties she has been
having with her children recently and offer medical support for the child if
necessary.
9 Reporter Report Yea, so we have come up with different ideas about the
(M2) the
opions
10 Leader (M1) Closing That’s right. Oh, by the way, next week the city is holding an event connecting
parents and children on Sunday morning, will your family join?
10 M2 Saying Great, I will take part in that event. See you then.
goodbye
10 M3 Saying I’m not sure I can be there or not as I have to work on the weekend. But I have to
goodbye go buy some vegatables now. See you later
