VISUAL ART STUDY NOTES

Topic 1

Neo classism (1750) red because of all the patriotism.


-serious
Neo – From the Greek word 'neos', which means ‘new’.
Classic – Refers to the ancient civilisations of the Roman and Greek times.

Characteristics:
-Serious and moralising (tells a story )
-Classical influences ( Greek and roman architecture )
- Calm, static pose (still poses )
-Balanced composition (symmetrical or asymmetrically balanced.[circles,
triangles and rectangles])
-Smooth application of paint (smooth, without any visible brushstrokes)
-Strong contrast in colour and tone
-Hard, precise outlines and shapes ( defined shapes )

Example : analysis of the Neo-Classical painting Oath of the Horatii.

- Oath to defend Rome

- 3 sons saluting swords

- Women in background are sad that the men are choosing their country
over family

- Women – feminine and emotional , soft and weak

- Men- masculine and courageous, strong

- Roman arches

- Men’s poses are statue like and still

- Symmetrically balances composition

- No visible brushstrokes

- Dull and bright colours, warm yellows and cool blues


- Carved and defined figures

Topic 2

Romanticism (1800) pink because of the drama and emotions

Characteristics

-Emotion and passion.

-The critique of progress.

-A return to the past.

-An awe of nature.

-The idealization of women.

-The purity of childhood.

-The search for subjective truth.

-The celebration of the individual.

-Originated from music and poetry

-celebrate individualism and the power of imagination and emotion in their


artworks

individualism – The idea of being independent and self-reliant. The


person's opinion is more important than the group's.

TOPIC 3

Realism ( 1850) orange because of the suffering and the poor


-everyday and truthful
-The Realists tried to emphasise truth and accuracy , showing everyday reality

Characteristics
-Subject matter: Working class and labourers
-Composition: A scene in progress
-Shapes clearly defined.
-Visible brushstrokes
-Sombre, earthy colours

Jean-Francois Millet, The Gleaners (1857), oil on canvas.

Consider the following in your paragraph (at least half a page):

In this painting Millet shows us three women gleaning in a field. ✓
-Composition [1 mark]
Millet made the people of his time aware of the plight of the poor. The three
figures are placed in the foreground of the painting with two bending over and
one resting. ✓ OR The composition looks like a snapshot or a scene in progress
of the lives of the peasant workers. ✓
-Shape [1 mark]
The shapes of the women are naturalistic, showing all the details of the figures,
objects and landscape. ✓ OR The shapes of the figures, objects and landscape
are clearly defined. ✓

The colour is typical of Realist paintings, using dull, sombre browns and yellows.

TOPIC 4
Impressionism (1860)

-main goal of the Impressionists was to break free

Characteristics
-Subject matter: Landscapes and daily life of ordinary people
-Colour: Pure colours
-Composition: Capture the fleeting moment
-Shapes: Undefined shapes
-Brushstrokes: Quick, short, visible brushstrokes

The boating party


In his painting The Boating Party, Kentridge used a free interpretation of Renoir’s
painting. The work was created in 1985 in response to the ongoing struggle
against apartheid in South Africa

- 3 panels
- Lady with dog now has a warthog
- Lade relaxing now is holding a meat roller
- Man, relaxing has now slaughtered the warthog preparing it to be meat
jelly
- Happy lady is now alone
- Behind her is destruction, rioting and apartheid.
- Warthog is then being cut up and served as a jelly
- Colour- turquoise, blood red
- The painting was charming now its horror and chaos
- Composition is divided
- Kentridge used soft charcoals, the figures are drawn in a soft smudgy
manner in
- contrast with the background which is drawn in a short rough movement
with
- quick strokes creating a rough/ jiggered edge
- The barriers in the artwork represent the barriers during the apartheid
time
- that created chaos and disorder in the country
- the society is divided in 2, the white are enjoying life while the oppressed
are absent

TOPIC 5
Post impressionist (1880)

Characteristics
-Subject matter: Still lifes, landscapes, portraits and bathers.
-Colour: Bright colours with outlines.
-Brushstrokes: Rectangular, solid and structural, like building blocks.
-Space and depth: Flat and shallow.
-Composition: Structured and planned.
-Approach: Formalist, concerned with the representation of form.
