Body Image and Self-Esteem

Body image impacts the way you feel about yourself and your well-being

Your body image is linked to your self-esteem, self-care, and your

overall physical and mental health.

When you feel good about yourself and have a positive body image,
you tend to care more about your choices and take better care of
yourself. Caring for yourself is one of the primary ways to control
your overall wellness.

When you don’t take care of yourself, your wellness can suffer in
many ways.

Body image and self-concept

Body image is a major part of your self-concept. Self-concept is a
combination of your thoughts and feelings about yourself physically,
personally, and socially, and how you view your abilities,
characteristics, and behaviors. Here’s a breakdown of the three
parts of self-concept (self-image, self-esteem, and ideal self).

Self-image is the way you see yourself

Your self-image doesn’t always match reality. Some people hold an
inflated perception of themselves. These viewpoints may be positive
or negative.
Example: Arrogance, conceitedness, or body dysmorphic disorder —
when you can’t stop focusing on what you perceive as a flaw.
Self-esteem is the value you place on yourself as a person
Levels of self-esteem are dependent on the way you evaluate
yourself.
Those evaluations include how you compare yourself to others as
well as others’ responses to you.
Example: You want to be or look like someone else, or you always
worry about what others might think.
Ideal self is the person you would like to be
Not seeing yourself as the person you would like to be can negatively
impact your self-esteem.
Example: Maintaining unrealistic expectations about your body can
make you feel unworthy. Receiving constructive feedback that
doesn’t fall in line with what you believe about yourself.

As you learn more about yourself and what’s important to you, your
self-concept changes over time. It’s also influenced by: social
situations, media, relationships, your motivation for self-discovery,
and your body image perceptions and feelings.

Body image and self-esteem

Your self-esteem determines your overall sense of personal value
and self-worth. The value you place on yourself impacts your body
image.

High self-esteem

When you have higher self-esteem, you’re more likely to have a

more positive outlook on life and your surroundings. This often leads
to less overall stress, more productivity, healthier food choices, and
more consistent exercise.

Low self-esteem

While creating higher self-esteem is essential, it’s also important to

remember that there are moments where it’s low. How can you
recognize those moments? Here are some of the common signs:

Not taking time for yourself.

Unable to accept compliments from others.
Thinking others are better than you or deserve more than you do.
Focusing on your negatives and ignoring your accomplishments.
Feeling sad, depressed, and/or anxious over things you normally
wouldn’t be upset over.
A poor body image and low self-esteem will affect the value you see
in your overall health and well-being. To make sure you get yourself
out of a low self-esteem mindset, be sure to practice the strategies
found in Make Peace With Your Body.

Reflect: How will you work toward a more positive body image so
you can create a healthier and happier world around you?

When you feel good about yourself and who you are, you carry
yourself with a sense of confidence and self-acceptance that makes
you beautiful, regardless of your weight, size, or shape.
