MECH-321 - Mechanics of deformable solids Problems Set 2

Problem 1
The rectangular plate show deforms in a parallelogram. The original lengths of the side s are PQ = 15
cm and PR = 30 cm. The point Q displaces to Q’, a distance of QQ’ = 0.01 cm, and the point R
displaces to R’, a distance RR’ = 0.015 cm. The plate is in plane strain.

30°

a) Determine ε xx ,ε yy ,ε xy at point P
b) Compute the volumetric strain
c) Do we have rigid body motions?
d) What would be the strain measured by a strain gauge oriented at 30° from the x axis?

Problem 2
A long thin plate of thickness t, width 2h and length 2a is subjected to loads that produce the uniform
stress σ o at the ends. The edges at y = ± h are placed between the two rigid walls.

 − σ o 0 0
a) Show that the solution σ =  0 − c 0 satisfies the equilibrium equation. (No body loads,
 0 0 0
c is a constant)
b) Using the 3-D constitutive relations find the value of c (Isotropic material , E and ν )
c) Find the strain tensor
d) Find the expression for the displacement uz (in the z-direction), with uz =0 at (0,0,0).

Problem 3
A thin prismatical bar of specific weight γ and constant cross section hangs in the vertical plane.
Under the effect of its own weight, the displacement field (u,v) is described by:

γ
u=
2E
(2xa − x 2
− νy 2 )
νγ
v=− (a − x )y
E
Ε = Young’s modulus
ν = Poisson’s ratio
u = displacement in x-direction
v = displacement in y-direction

The z displacement and stresses may be neglected.

a) Find the strain components in the bar

b) Find the stress components in the bar
c) Check to see whether the boundary conditions are satisfied by the stresses found.

Problem 4
A uniform pressure p acts over the entire straight edge of a large plate.

What are normal stress components σxx and σzz acting on a volumetric element at some distance from
loading in terms of Poisson’s ratio ν and p, as required?

Assume that εxx = εzz = 0 and σyy = -p everywhere.

Problem 5
P
A solid cylinder of radius r is subjected to an axial force P and a torque T as shown.
A strain gauge is glued to the cylinder surface and is oriented at α from the axial T
load
axis.

a) Write and show the 3D state of stress (function of P, T and r) on an z

α
infinitesimal representative element (cube) at the gauge location (use
cylindrical coordinate system with z-direction in the direction of load P). θ
Write
the 3D stress tensor.

b) Write the 3D strain tensor (function of P, T, r, E and ν) for the representative

element defined in a). The material has a Young’s modulus E and Poisson’s ratio ν.

c) Find the magnitude of the strain measured by the strain gauge (use strain
transformation equations provided in the formula sheet). Use the following numbers: P = 10 kN, T =
100 Nm, r = 0.01 m, E = 200 GPa, ν = 0.3, α = 30°.
