About Our Full-length Practice Test and the GED® Mathematical Reasoning Test
Significant effort was made to construct a practice test that accurately reflects the scope and feel of the official
GED® Mathematical Reasoning Test questions as described at www.ged.com.

The GED® Mathematical Reasoning Test covers a wide array of math topics broken down into 2-main categories:
Quantitative Reasoning (approximately 45% of the test) and Algebraic Reasoning (approximately 55% of the test).

Test takers are given 115 total test minutes (+ 3-minute break between sections) to complete:
• Part I – 5 questions with no calculator
• Part II – 41 questions with calculator use allowed

This gives test takers an average of 2.5 minutes to complete each question. We recommend students rehearse taking
this practice exam timed to get a feel for how much time they will have to complete the official test.

In most states, students will take the GED® on a computer. This allows for various question types, including:
• Multiple-choice • Drag-and-drop
• Fill-in-the-blank • Table entry (type missing values found on a table)
• Matching • Multiple-select (choose more than one correct answer)

All non-multiple-choice questions included in our paper practice test are found at the end of the exam to:
• Help call out alternative answer types so students can practice these questions together.
• Make grading the exam simpler.

Alternative answer type questions will not be collected like this on the official exam. Rather, they may be
encountered at any point in the exam.

When taking the official GED® computer-based exam students will have access to an onscreen calculator for
questions that allow calculator use. Students are additionally permitted to bring a TI-30XS calculator if they prefer.
It is a good idea for test takers to become familiar with the official computer-based test taking tools before taking
the test by going to https://ged.com/practice-test/en/computer-demonstrator/ .

Students should be provided with the GED® Test Mathematics Formulas Sheet for use throughout the test.

Grading

Official GED® scores range from 100-200. Passing scores fall into 3 categories:
≥ 145 GED® Passing Score 165 – 174 GED® College Ready 175 – 200 GED® College Ready + Credit

GED Mathematical Reasoning Mini-Practice Test
Detailed Solutions

About This Document

Below you will find example solutions to the questions found on GED Mathematical Reasoning Mini-Practice Test.
Many of these problems have several possible solution methods. The explanations presented below offer one way
to solve these problems. There are definitely others.

Part I – Calculator Use Not Allowed

# Answer Explanation
Draw a number line and plot the points from -4 to 2. Then, count the distance from -4 to 2 by
counting the spaces that you travel as you move from 2 down to -4.

1 D

The trip from 2 to -4 is across 6 spaces.

Separately multiply coefficients and radicals.

2√5 × 3√5
(2 × 3)(√5 × √5)
2 A (6)(√25)
(6)(5)
30

Part IIA – Calculator Use Allowed

# Answer Explanation
The box and whisker plot has four sections, known as quartiles, each representing 25% of the data.
The median is found in the middle, between the 2 nd and 3rd quartiles. That is the 50% mark. Here,
3 A
the median number of fish tanks sold in March at Tropical Paradise Fish Tanks was 24.

The table starts at a value of $150 for 0 hours of painting. This is the materials cost.. For 1 hour of
painting the cost is $200. For 2 hours of painting the cost is $250. Since the cost starts at $150 and
increases by $50 for each hour of painting, we can use the equation C = $50h + $150 where C =
4 C
the total cost, and h = hours of painting. To find the cost of 10 hours of painting, we can use:
C = $50(10) + $150 = $500 + $150 = $650

To find the perimeter of a triangle we can use P = S1 + S2 + S3. Here, we are given the perimeter
and two sides, we can substitute those values, to write:
31 = 8 + 10 + S3
5 C 31 = 18 + S3
31 – 18 = 18 + S3 – 18 Subtract 18 from both expressions to isolate S3.
13 = S3

To find the value of g(x) = 4x2 + 3x – 5 when x = -4, substitute -4 for x, then evaluate.
g(-4) = 4(-4)2 + 3(-4) – 5
g(-4) = 4(16) + (-12) – 5
6 B
g(-4) = 64 – 12 – 5
g(-4) = 52 – 5
g(-4) = 47

The graph has an open circle at -1 and an arrow passing through all points to the left of -1. This
represents the inequality x < -1. However, which choice represents an inequality with the same
solution set? To find out, separately solve each inequality.
2x + 8 < 6
2x + 8 ≤ 6
A. 2x + 8 < 6 B. 2x + 8  6 C. x–1<0 D. x ≤ -1
7 A 2x + 8 – 8 < 6 – 8 x–1+1<0+1
2x + 8 – 8  6 – 8
2x < -2 x<1
2x  -2
2𝑥 −2
< 2𝑥 −2
2 2 ≤
2 2
x < -1
x  -1

Since m represents the number of miles, first substitute 10 for m. Then, solve for c.
c = 2.5(10) + 3
8 C c = 25 + 3
c = $28.00
Only table D has four individual x-values. In this table, no x-value is matched with more than
9 D one y-value. In table A, 3 is paired with 2 and also paired with 9. In table B, -2 is paired with 4
and with -4. In table C, 8 is paired with 6 and also with 4.

Part IIB – Calculator Use Allowed

# Answer Explanation
We can start by writing all given equations in slope-intercept form, or y = mx + b form.
1
A. y = 3x – 8
1
B. y = 3x + 4
C. -3x + y = -28 becomes y = 3x – 28
1
D. x + 3y = 36 becomes y = -3x + 12
1
E. -x + 3y = 12 becomes y = 3x + 4
1 1
F. x + y = 12 becomes y = -3x + 12
3
10 B, E
1
Next, we eliminate all equations that do not have a slope of 3. This leaves us with choices A, B,
and E. Then, we substitute 12 for x and 8 for y. Only choices B and E result in true statements.
Choice A Choices B and E
1 1
y = 3x – 8 y = 3x + 4
1 1
8 = (12) – 8 8 = (12) + 4
3 3

8=4–8 8=4+4
8 = -4 8=8
